{"id":214296,"date":"2025-06-25T22:39:10","date_gmt":"2025-06-25T22:39:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/214296\/"},"modified":"2025-06-25T22:39:10","modified_gmt":"2025-06-25T22:39:10","slug":"welsh-university-collapse-is-a-real-danger-senedd-hears","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/214296\/","title":{"rendered":"Welsh university collapse is a &#8216;real danger&#8217;, Senedd hears"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n  Dan Beard, who chairs Unison Cymru\u2019s higher education forum, told the Senedd\u2019s education committee: \u201cWithout change, we will see universities collapsing or contracting significantly.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Giving evidence to an inquiry on higher education, which was prompted by cuts at institutions across Wales, Unison called for urgent intervention from ministers. \u201cNearly all universities are making cuts to some degree or another,\u201d Mr Beard told the inquiry.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Unison described the Welsh Government\u2019s February announcement of \u00a318.5m for universities as &#8216;nowhere near enough,&#8217; with Cardiff alone facing a \u00a330m shortfall.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  \u201cWithout a strategy and funding, Welsh universities will continue to contract, shedding staff and closing unprofitable courses,\u201d the union said in its written <a href=\"https:\/\/eur03.safelinks.protection.outlook.com\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.google.com%2Furl%3Fq%3Dhttps%3A%2F%2Fbusiness.senedd.wales%2Fdocuments%2Fs162892%2FPaper%2525201%252520-%252520UNISON.pdf%26sa%3DD%26source%3Deditors%26ust%3D1750851976007808%26usg%3DAOvVaw3br2WTpnr4essLbjc_9RHY&amp;data=05%7C02%7Cai.reporting-wales%40newsquest.co.uk%7Cc82543ab4bcb466f633908ddb3d5b8d1%7Cb0660fd33ef04a73b44ef93c297faf15%7C0%7C0%7C638864452693865088%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJFbXB0eU1hcGkiOnRydWUsIlYiOiIwLjAuMDAwMCIsIlAiOiJXaW4zMiIsIkFOIjoiTWFpbCIsIldUIjoyfQ%3D%3D%7C0%7C%7C%7C&amp;sdata=KT7ZmfCWFjpw4UA%2FZfvsnZkmLYOWAEoJpulqkWExZHM%3D&amp;reserved=0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">evidence<\/a>.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Unison expressed frustration with the Welsh Government \u201cwaiting to see\u201d how UK ministers respond, cautioning: \u201cThe gravity of the situation means we can\u2019t afford to wait.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  The trade union said higher education institutions face a dire financial situation, with hundreds of redundancies proposed which could be devastating for Wales. \u201cThere is a real danger a university in Wales could collapse next year,\u201d Unison warned.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Gareth Lloyd, Wales official at the University and College Union (UCU), said the union\u2019s members felt ambushed by Cardiff University\u2019s announcement of job cuts.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Pinning a breakdown in trust at the university\u2019s door, he told the committee: \u201cThe Cardiff UCU branch responded as they felt appropriate based on their membership.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Mr Lloyd said: \u201cOn every level, discussion has to take place early on \u2013 you do not go to the press, make announcements and put people\u2019s jobs at risk.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  He raised the upsetting impact of the cuts on students as well as UCU members, warning: \u201cIf we\u2019re not careful, this could have a real detrimental effect on students who don\u2019t want to go there and that really, really worries me.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  During the meeting on June 25, Mr Beard added: \u201cPrivately, there were lots of senior leaders in other universities aghast about how Cardiff University went about it\u2026.
