The highest year for arrivals was 2022 at 45,774.<\/p>\n<p>Thousands of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thesun.co.uk\/news\/34632139\/hotel-asylum-seekers-immigration-migrants\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">asylum seekers are being housed in hotels<\/a>, increasing tensions in towns and cities.<\/p>\n<p>Some have since been charged with national security offences, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thesun.co.uk\/news\/35503865\/rape-charges-asylum-seeker-hotel\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">as well as crimes such as rape.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>A top security source told The Sun: \u201cHostile states and malign actors are using illegal migration to test borders, cause disruption and destabilise countries like Britain.<\/p>\n<p>Sun probe uncovers asylum seekers in hotels linked to string of rape cases<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s exactly why Nato is now treating border protection as a core part of collective defence \u2014 because the lines between traditional military threats and national security are more blurred than ever.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Opposition MPs said our broken borders are being tested by hostile states while ministers sit on their hands.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thesun.co.uk\/who\/chris-philp\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Shadow Home Secretary Chris Philp<\/a> said: \u201cThis is a national security crisis. A public safety crisis and border security crisis.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe news that hostile states are weaponising illegal migration shows that the Government has been \u00adnegligent in failing to tackle the boat crisis.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe way to stop it is to immediately remove illegal immigrants to a location outside <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thesun.co.uk\/where\/europe\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Europe<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thesun.co.uk\/topic\/labour-party\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Labour<\/a> scrapped the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thesun.co.uk\/news\/30303439\/rwanda-migrant-plan-scrapped-germany\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Rwanda deterrent<\/a> before it even started and now record numbers are coming in.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thesun.co.uk\/topic\/reform-uk\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Reform UK<\/a> leader <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thesun.co.uk\/who\/nigel-farage\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Nigel Farage<\/a> added: \u201cI first warned this would happen in my European Parliament speeches over ten years ago.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe crossings are a national security emergency.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Britain spends billions on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thesun.co.uk\/topic\/uk-border-force\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">border forces<\/a>, coastal patrols and surveillance in the Channel.<\/p>\n<p>These can all now be logged as part of our Nato commitment. <\/p>\n<p>Senior officials say the move reflects how lines between military threats and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thesun.co.uk\/topic\/crime\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">criminal<\/a> activity are being blurred by hostile regimes.<\/p>\n<p>Home Office insiders insist the UK is not blind to the growing risk from foreign interference in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thesun.co.uk\/news\/35519976\/border-crisis-migrants-channel-crossing\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Channel crisis.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Countries such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thesun.co.uk\/where\/russia\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Russia<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thesun.co.uk\/where\/iran\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Iran<\/a> have long used underhand tactics to mess with the West \u2014 from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thesun.co.uk\/topic\/cyber-crime-hacking\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">cyber attacks<\/a> and disinformation to stirring up migration.<\/p>\n<p>Security sources say Russia and its puppet-state <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thesun.co.uk\/where\/belarus\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Belarus<\/a> have been accused of orchestrating migrant surges on Europe\u2019s eastern borders by providing fake documents, transport, and military escorts to the gangs.<\/p>\n<p>And only last month, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thesun.co.uk\/news\/34993999\/iranian-counter-terror-probe-met-police\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">three Iranian men charged with spying offences,<\/a> including plotting violence on UK soil, were found to have reached Britain by \u201cirregular means\u201d \u2014 including small boats and a lorry \u2014 before claiming asylum.<\/p>\n<p>In March <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thesun.co.uk\/news\/32869916\/polish-donald-tusk-breturn-europe-keir-brexit\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Polish PM Donald Tusk<\/a> suspended asylum rights for those arriving from Belarus \u2014 warning the crisis is part of a deliberate hybrid warfare strategy backed by hostile states.<\/p>\n<p>And Italian defence minister Guido Crosetto has accused the Kremlin-linked Wagner group of helping drive immigration from North Africa to Europe, calling it a \u201cclear strategy of hybrid warfare\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"#\"><img the Nato summit in The Hague in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thesun.co.uk\/where\/netherlands\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Netherlands<\/a>, where member states\u2019 leaders confirmed plans for all allies to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thesun.co.uk\/news\/35538040\/starmer-defence-spending-army-labour-politics\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">spend five per cent of GDP on defence and security by 2035.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The pledge covers 3.5 per cent for hard defence, like troops and weapons, and 1.5 per cent on wider security, which includes infrastructure, energy security and border protection.<\/p>\n<p>Security Minister Dan Jarvis said: \u201cNational security is the first duty of any government \u2014 and that means securing our borders.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are improving our ability to monitor and anticipate illegal migration flows at both national and international levels, including investing in new state-of-the-art surveillance technology.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur Border Security Command is drawing together security operations around our border.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis means working in close co-operation with Europol, Frontex and individual <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thesun.co.uk\/topic\/european-union\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">EU<\/a> member states to combat organised immigration crime.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNew counter terrorism-style powers will tackle organised immigration crime groups, and existing capabilities carry out identity and criminal record checks on those applying for a visa, clandestine entries and those who arrive by small boat, so that potential threats are immediately addressed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Sun understands <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thesun.co.uk\/who\/yvette-cooper\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the Home Secretary<\/a> has also ordered officials to review border security capabilities to ensure they are robust enough to deal with state threats, as well as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thesun.co.uk\/topic\/terrorism\/page\/72\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">terrorism<\/a>-related risks.<\/p>\n<p>And after Sir Keir Starmer\u2019s meeting with Mr Tusk in leaving the property.
