Picture: Halyna Ustinova<\/p>\n<p>The occasion is an opportunity for community gatherings featuring singing, dancing, food and events including a competition to find the best shyvanka on display &#8211; shyvanka being the embroidered shirt that is distinctively Ukrainian. One of the tents also featured \u2018vinok\u2019 makers: the vinok, a traditional headdress worn by young Ukrainian women, is made from flower and grass wreaths.<\/p>\n<p>Speakers emphasised the inclusivity of the festival, the celebratory nature of the occasion, and the fact that such events are \u201can act of defiance against those who would erase Ukraine\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"rthmb\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml,%3Csvg xmlns=\" http:=\"\" viewbox=\"0 0 3754 2084\" alt=\"Olha, left, and Maryna at the 2025 Kupala Festival Picture: Mike Scialom\" data-root=\"\/_media\/img\/\" data-path=\"KRQNPHLT7F4ZUV6X22QZ.jpg\" data-ar=\"1.80\"\/>Olha, left, and Maryna at the 2025 Kupala Festival Picture: Mike Scialom<\/p>\n<p>Stalls included Natalia\u2019s Dream from Peterborough, whose incredible menu showcased sweet and savoury Ukrainian fare &#8211; hopefully they\u2019ll open in Cambridge soon!<\/p>\n<p>Ukrainian beekeepers Pure Mustard Honey from Dry Drayton had a stall showcasing their honeycombs, run by Natalia Yartseva who said they were entering a UK-wide competition to find the best honey, which will take place at the Cambridge Country Fair in August.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"rthmb\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml,%3Csvg xmlns=\" http:=\"\" viewbox=\"0 0 3481 2084\" alt=\"'Vinok', traditional headdresses worn by young Ukrainian women, at the Waterbeach Kupala Festival. Picture: Mike Scialom<\/p>\n<p>Not far away <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cambridgeindependent.co.uk\/news\/cambridge-hosts-1-of-war-screening-to-mark-third-annivers-9405485\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Vadym Granovskiy<\/a> was busy squeezing juice for the signature flat red from Ukraine made from fresh pomegranates, orange juice and coffee. Vadym had created150 coffees by mid-afternoon, while nearby Ukrainian crafts, clothes and food was drawing the crowds.<\/p>\n<p>Running though this \u201cact of defiance\u201d in the face of the full-scale Russian invasion of 24 February 24, 2022 was the awareness that Ukraine continues to face a battle for survival. A minute\u2019s silence was held for the fallen, estimated at 13,341 Ukrainians killed (confirmed). In addition, 32,744 Ukrainians have been wounded, and 20,000 Ukrainian children forcibly transferred into Russia.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"rthmb\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml,%3Csvg xmlns=\" http:=\"\" viewbox=\"0 0 4023 2565\" alt=\"Midsummer dance at the Waterbeach Kupala Festival, 22 June 2025. Picture: Halyna Ustinova<\/p>\n<p>Over at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cambridgeindependent.co.uk\/news\/much-needed-vehicles-and-aid-reach-ukraine-from-cambridge-9365441\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Convoy4Ukraine<\/a>, chair Tom Walston and driver Jamie Sandison explained that the team was getting ready to do its 10th shipment of aid and 4x4s to Ukraine in September.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy the end of that convoy we will have taken 12 vehicles to Ukraine,\u201d he said. \u201cWe leave them there &#8211; the 4x4s are the most important part, though we also took an ambulance one time. Picture: Mike Scialom<\/p>\n<p>He added: \u201cThe September convoy will involve 16 vehicles at least &#8211; it gets bigger every time and it all helps give them the strength to carry on\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>By mid-afternoon the dancing started, the sun was shining and later in the afternoon the shyvanka competition brought some beautifully dressed children to the stage by the new lake in Waterbeach.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"rthmb\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml,%3Csvg xmlns=\" http:=\"\" viewbox=\"0 0 2399 1514\" alt=\"Organiser Inna Sukhoraba at the Waterbeach Kupala Festival, 22 June 2025. I sincerely thank the British and Ukrainian communities, as well as the organisations and small businesses whose joint efforts helped us create an authentic atmosphere and share more about Ukraine and the &#8216;Return the Stolen Children&#8217; campaign.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The event was organised in support of UK Friends of Ukraine.
