{"id":214649,"date":"2025-06-26T01:48:16","date_gmt":"2025-06-26T01:48:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/214649\/"},"modified":"2025-06-26T01:48:16","modified_gmt":"2025-06-26T01:48:16","slug":"sudan-war-children-killed-in-appalling-hospital-attack-in-west-kordofan-says-who","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/214649\/","title":{"rendered":"Sudan war: Children killed in &#8216;appalling&#8217; hospital attack in West Kordofan, says WHO"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Since Sudan&#8217;s civil war began in April 2023, the scale of suffering is so vast that the UN has labelled it the world&#8217;s worst humanitarian crisis.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">In addition to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hrw.org\/breaking-news\/2025\/01\/08\/us-state-department-determines-genocide-sudan\" class=\"ssrcss-f6h2dj-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">allegations of genocide, external<\/a> in Darfur, the murder of many thousands of civilians across the country, plus the displacement of millions more, both sides in this conflict have been accused of carrying out war crimes on medical facilities and staff, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/world-africa-65718968\" class=\"ssrcss-f6h2dj-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">according to evidence seen by BBC News Arabic<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Al-Mujlad Hospital, in the town of Muglad, was &#8220;the only functioning healthcare facility in the area&#8221;, <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/SDN154\/status\/1936837286148096457\" class=\"ssrcss-f6h2dj-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\">according to the Sudan Doctors Network, external<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Of the more than 40 people killed, six of them were children and five were health workers, <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/whosudan\/status\/1936883487442629110\" class=\"ssrcss-f6h2dj-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\">the WHO&#8217;s office in Sudan said on Sunday, external<\/a>. Dozens of other people were injured too, it added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Crucially, the hospital ran a dialysis unit and focused on the care of civilians as opposed to soldiers, <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/EmergncyLawyers\/status\/1936560886816133352\" class=\"ssrcss-f6h2dj-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\">according to the Emergency Lawyers group, external<\/a>, which documents abuses by both the RSF and the army.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Both the Sudan Doctors Network and the Emergency Lawyers group say the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) were to blame for the attack on Saturday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">But the doctors&#8217; body says the reason for the attack was that the army was trying to   kill RSF fighters &#8220;stationed inside&#8221; al-Mujlad Hospital. The RSF has not commented on that claim, nor has the army.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">On Monday, the head of the UN children&#8217;s agency, Unicef, warned of a &#8220;worsening crisis&#8221; for children caused by Sudan&#8217;s civil war and said the aid response lacked two-thirds of the funding needed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Visiting refugees in neighbouring Chad, Catherine Russell said &#8220;hundreds of thousands of the most vulnerable children are bearing the brunt of both the war in Sudan and a lack of essential services for those who have fled to Chad&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Many children are &#8220;malnourished, out of school, and at serious risk of exploitation and disease&#8221;, she added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Among the most harrowing accounts to come out of Sudan&#8217;s war is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/cvgpdxk853jo\" class=\"ssrcss-f6h2dj-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the evidence that armed men are raping and sexually assaulting children as young as one<\/a>.
