{"id":215228,"date":"2025-06-26T06:53:12","date_gmt":"2025-06-26T06:53:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/215228\/"},"modified":"2025-06-26T06:53:12","modified_gmt":"2025-06-26T06:53:12","slug":"womans-common-sex-problem-turned-out-to-be-deadly-cervical-cancer-as-smear-tests-are-to-be-given-less-often","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/215228\/","title":{"rendered":"Woman&#8217;s common sex problem turned out to be deadly cervical cancer&#8230;as smear tests are to be given LESS often"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">A woman hit with advanced cervical <a style=\"font-weight: bold;\" target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/cancer\/index.html\" id=\"mol-d50aa490-51cf-11f0-8e38-d35a2331f9ca\" rel=\"noopener\">cancer<\/a> at 25 has urged others to attend every screening test\u2014after she delayed her smear due to fears sparked by &#8216;online horror stories&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Jasmin McKee, now 26, from Southampton, began suffering lower back pain and bleeding after sex in 2023, but assumed it was due to her\u00a0newly-fitted copper coil.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">The operations manager had also &#8216;put off&#8217; her cervical screening after reading fear-mongering stories online that suggested the procedure was painful.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">But in March 2024, she eventually plucked up the courage to attend the test which, to her horror, confirmed she had the cancer-causing virus, human papillomavirus (<a style=\"font-weight: bold;\" target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/hpv\/index.html\" id=\"mol-ff09fb50-51da-11f0-8e38-d35a2331f9ca\" rel=\"noopener\">HPV<\/a>).\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Around 99 per cent of all cervical cancers are caused by the HPV virus, which can be spread via sexual contact.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Doctors also discovered that Ms McKee had abnormal cell changes within her cervix, with a later biopsy confirming the presence of cancer.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Further scans showed the disease was stage three, meaning it had spread to nearby tissues.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Around 60 per cent of those diagnosed at this stage won&#8217;t survive for longer than five years, according to Cancer Research UK.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>   <img decoding=\"async\" id=\"i-af15d559992f20ca\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/99712223-14846407-image-m-42_1750866215548.jpg\" height=\"724\" width=\"634\" alt=\"Only four in ten of those diagnosed with cervical cancer at this stage live for more than five years\" class=\"blkBorder img-share\" style=\"max-width:100%\" loading=\"lazy\" \/>   <\/p>\n<p class=\"imageCaption\">Only four in ten of those diagnosed with cervical cancer at this stage live for more than five years<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">\u00a0&#8216;Everything just goes a bit numb\u2026 it\u2019s just such a big shock,&#8217; she said of learning the devastating news.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">&#8216;I didn\u2019t want the people that I love the most feeling sad for me. I just didn\u2019t want them to worry.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">She immediately regretted delaying her screening test.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">&#8216;It was nothing to worry about,&#8217; she said. &#8216;I was in and out in 10 minutes and, for me, it was painless.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">&#8216;[Cervical screening tests]\u00a0are not an embarrassing thing, the nurses will do 20 of them a day, no one cares.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">&#8216;It\u2019s so quick, it\u2019s nothing to be scared about and they can save your life.&#8217;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\"><a style=\"font-weight: bold;\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.gofundme.com\/f\/support-jas-to-beat-stage-3-cervical-cancer.\">Ms McKee<\/a> underwent surgery in November last year to\u00a0try and remove the tumour, but doctors were unable to destroy it completely\u2014and it continued to grow.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">In January this year, she began radiotherapy, five days a week for three weeks, and decided to tell her family about her diagnosis.<\/p>\n<p>   <img decoding=\"async\" id=\"i-431c9182e924493f\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/99712229-14846407-image-a-43_1750866339478.jpg\" height=\"845\" width=\"634\" alt=\"She assumed that bleeding after sex was a result of her contraceptive coil, which was recently fitted\" class=\"blkBorder img-share\" style=\"max-width:100%\" loading=\"lazy\" \/>   <\/p>\n<p class=\"imageCaption\">She assumed that bleeding after sex was a result of her contraceptive coil, which was recently fitted<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">\u00a0Unfortunately, scans revealed the radiotherapy had not been effective, and chemotherapy was needed, which she underwent in April.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">She is currently having eight rounds of chemotherapy every three weeks, and is expected to finish treatment in early September 2025.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">&#8216;Once I\u2019m better, I\u2019m going to grab every opportunity and get as much happiness out of life as possible,&#8217; said a spokesperson.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">&#8216;This means if you test negative for HPV, you don\u2019t need to be screened as often as your risk of developing cervical cancer is very low.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">&#8216;If you test positive for HPV, we\u2019ll monitor you more closely with additional tests and follow-up appointments.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">&#8216;This personalised approach ensures everyone receives the right level of screening based on their individual risk factors, providing better protection while reducing unnecessary procedures.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">The NHS website says anyone worried about symptoms of cervical cancer should see their GP.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Typical signs include unusual vaginal bleeding\u2014such as during or after sex, between periods or after the menopause\u2014pain during sex or in the lower back, pelvis and\/or tummy, and changes to vaginal discharge.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Research published last year found the UK death rate among women from cervical cancer has dropped by 54 per cent over the last 25 years.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Experts say this is mostly due to of the HPV vaccine, which is given to teenagers and reduces cervical cancer risk by 90 per cent.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">In 2023 NHS England announced a plan to &#8216;eliminate&#8217;
