Credit: Nick Potts\/PA Wire<\/p>\n<p>Euros-bound Wales striker Hannah Cain feared her career was over after suffering two ACL injuries.<\/p>\n<p>Cain bounced back after tearing anterior cruciate ligaments in November 2021 but then suffered another horror injury two years later to leave her career in danger.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe pain of the second one was a lot worse,\u201d Cain told the PA news agency.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe first one I did my ACL. The second one I did ACL, meniscus, and fractured my femur when the ACL ripped off.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was pretty hefty, very painful. Horrendous. When I was on the floor I remember saying to the manager (Gemma Grainger), \u2018I can\u2019t believe I\u2019ve done it again\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.climateaction.gov.wales\/green-choices\/?utm_source=online&amp;utm_medium=nation_cymru&amp;utm_campaign=sbw_caw_mygreenchoices_mayjune25_eng\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/CAW049319-STATIC-IMAGES-NATION-CYMRU.jpg\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Mental challenge<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Asked if she had concerns over her career, Cain said: \u201cI did a little bit. Not so much the fact I\u2019d had the injury, it was more so mentally.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCould I come back? Did I want to come back? It was a lot tougher mentally than it was physically.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cain\u2019s return from her second ACL coincided with Wales\u2019 march to their first major tournament under Rhian Wilkinson in Switzerland this summer.<\/p>\n<p>The 26-year-old scored the opening goal from the penalty spot as Wales beat Republic of Ireland 2-1 in the decisive second leg of their Euros play-off final in December.<\/p>\n<p>She said: \u201cI knew I was on penalties before the game, but kind of forgot at first.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI had a moment of panic as I thought: \u2018Right, this is the biggest moment in Welsh history and it\u2019s got to go in\u2019 \u2013 and obviously it did.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKnowing I could make an impact in such a big game was an unbelievable feeling.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.library.wales\/visit\/things-to-do\/exhibitions\/no-welsh-art\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/4776_NLW_No-Welsh-Art-Digital-Advert_Mar-2025_Land_V2_EN-1.jpg\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>England representation<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Doncaster-born Cain began playing football with her brother in the park at the age of four, and says she persuaded her mother to continue after telling her \u201cballet was not an option\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Qualifying for Wales through her grandfather Bob, Cain joined the national set-up at the age of 14 but switched allegiance and represented England from Under-17 to Under-21 level.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI had a bad foot injury and I didn\u2019t think international football was for me,\u201d said the Leicester player.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut then Gemma, who I knew from the England youth set-up, asked me to come back and play for Wales.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI came down to watch a game with my grandad and he kept saying, \u2018you\u2019ve got to do it\u2019. I phoned Gemma the next day and said, \u2018Yeah, get me in.
