Firefighters were at the scene of a Birmingham city centre building hit by an electrical fire and flooding today.<\/p>\n

The five-storey structure, which is being renovated, was evacuated.<\/p>\n

West Midlands Fire Service was called just before 8.30am on Thursday June 26 to the incident on Steelhouse Lane.<\/p>\n

A fire service spokesperson said two crews remained on Steelhouse Lane, which has a number of historic buildings.<\/p>\n

Members of the pubic were warned to avoid the area as there was “significant disruption and delays”.<\/a><\/p>\n

Firefighters continued to pump water away from the scene and National Grid workers were also present.<\/p>\n

A West Midlands Fire Service spokesperson said: “Crews have attended an incident involving flooding and electrical fire in a five-storey building on Steelhouse Lane in Birmingham city centre.<\/a><\/p>\n

“We were called just after 8.25am on Wednesday 26 June. Three fire engines and a 4×4 brigade response vehicle responded, with firefighters from Aston, Highgate and Handsworth attending.<\/p>\n

“The fire, in the basement electrical switchboard, is believed to have been caused by overnight flooding. Two firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used a CO2 extinguisher to tackle the fire and ventilated the basement.<\/p>\n

“The building, which is currently void and undergoing renovation, was fully evacuated before our arrival.<\/p>\n

“Firefighters are continuing to pump water from the basement and are monitoring for any signs of reignition.<\/p>\n

“Representatives from National Grid are also at the scene to isolate the electrical supply.<\/p>\n
