Three tonnes of padlocks attached to a footbridge in the city centre of Bristol are due to be removed.<\/p>\n
The \u201clove locks\u201d are put on Pero\u2019s Bridge by couples as a romantic way of symbolising their attachment, with the keys often thrown into the water below.<\/p>\n
Bristol City Council<\/a> is concerned that the locks, estimated to weigh three tonnes, have become too heavy.<\/p>\n They will be taken off the bridge at some point in the next few weeks, before the upcoming Harbour Festival on July 18\u201320, and potentially placed on a structure nearby.<\/p>\n Until the removal, the council will not lift the bridge for boats to pass through, due to the weight of the locks.<\/p>\n An update on the removal plan was given to councillors on the harbour committee on Tuesday, June 24.<\/p>\n Patsy Mellor, director of management of place, said: \u201cWe have got a \u2018no lift\u2019 notice on Pero\u2019s Bridge due to the weight of the locks. It\u2019s three tonnes, the estimated weight of the locks.<\/p>\n “The team is working on a solution where we can place the locks in a nearby structure of some sort. They have to be removed before the Harbour Festival, so it\u2019ll happen quite quickly.\u201d<\/p>\n Pero\u2019s Bridge links Queen Square and Millennium Square, and was named after Pero Jones who was enslaved and lived in Bristol in the 18th century.
