{"id":215786,"date":"2025-06-26T11:48:10","date_gmt":"2025-06-26T11:48:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/215786\/"},"modified":"2025-06-26T11:48:10","modified_gmt":"2025-06-26T11:48:10","slug":"glasgow-art-centre-shuts-after-police-called-over-planned-pro-palestinian-take-over","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/215786\/","title":{"rendered":"Glasgow art centre shuts after police called over planned pro-Palestinian take-over"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"pt-dp-p font-text-light font-light text-lg leading-normal tracking-wide mb-base last:mb-0\" itemprop=\"text\">Glasgow\u2019s Centre for Contemporary Art (CCA) is temporarily closed after police have been called to remove pro-Palestinian protestors who had planned to host an unofficial week-long programme of workshops, screenings and more in its courtyard. <\/p>\n<p class=\"pt-dp-p font-text-light font-light text-lg leading-normal tracking-wide mb-base last:mb-0\" itemprop=\"text\">The take-over was organised by Art Workers for Palestine Scotland, who have been calling on the CCA to back the Palestinian Campaign for the Academic and Cultural Boycott of Israel (PACBI) in light of the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. PACBI\u2014part of the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions Movement (BDS) movement\u2014advocates for a boycott of Israeli academic and cultural institutions perceived to be connected to the oppression of Palestinian rights as stipulated in international law.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pt-dp-p font-text-light font-light text-lg leading-normal tracking-wide mb-base last:mb-0\" itemprop=\"text\">On 6 June, CCA announced on their Instagram account that the board had not come to a consensus on publicly endorsing the boycott.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pt-dp-p font-text-light font-light text-lg leading-normal tracking-wide mb-base last:mb-0\" itemprop=\"text\">Art Workers for Palestine Scotland\u2019s programme was to comprise readings of anti-colonial texts, celebrations of Palestinian art, screenings showing films about the region and more. A group of protestors are understood to have begun occupying the building, <a class=\"transition-colors duration-default shadow-externalLink hover:text-blue-900\" href=\"https:\/\/www.glasgowtimes.co.uk\/news\/scottish-news\/25264169.palestine-protestors-took-cca-glasgow-city-centre\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">according to<\/a> the Glasgow Times, while crowds gathered in solidarity outside before police arrived.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pt-dp-p font-text-light font-light text-lg leading-normal tracking-wide mb-base last:mb-0\" itemprop=\"text\">Art Workers for Palestine Scotland said in a statement: \u201cDuring a family-friendly reading and Arabic writing lesson outside the premises, CCA called the police who violently escalated: kettling members of the public, brutally arresting an elderly woman, and unforgivably putting their hands on us. Earlier, CCA\u2019s internal security assaulted and tackled an art worker to the floor for entering the public space of the courtyard.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"pt-dp-p font-text-light font-light text-lg leading-normal tracking-wide mb-base last:mb-0\" itemprop=\"text\">The group condemned the actions of the CCA security in calling the police. A <a class=\"transition-colors duration-default shadow-externalLink hover:text-blue-900\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/reel\/DLSLqmyqkfH\/?igsh=MWd0bXVlMTM2eDhvYw==\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">video shared on social media<\/a> showed a handcuffed person in a red t-shirt being dragged into the back of a police van.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pt-dp-p font-text-light font-light text-lg leading-normal tracking-wide mb-base last:mb-0\" itemprop=\"text\">\u201cYesterday\u2019s brutal events at CCA have torn apart the fabric of the art world,\u201d they said in a statement today. \u201cThe illusion has been shattered, all trust is lost, the mask has dropped.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"pt-dp-p font-text-light font-light text-lg leading-normal tracking-wide mb-base last:mb-0\" itemprop=\"text\">In comments sent to the The Art Newspaper, a CCA spokesperson said: \u201cThe team here is actively working to support our staff and community in light of this week\u2019s events, and to respond with care to the disruption and its wider impact both within and beyond the building.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"pt-dp-p font-text-light font-light text-lg leading-normal tracking-wide mb-base last:mb-0\" itemprop=\"text\">The spokesperson referred to a <a class=\"transition-colors duration-default shadow-externalLink hover:text-blue-900\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cca-glasgow.com\/journal\/temporary-building-closure-25-6-25\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cholding statement\u201d<\/a> from the CCA board, which begins: \u201cIn light of recent events and ongoing conversations involving the Centre for Contemporary Arts (CCA), we\u2019ve made the decision to keep the building closed to the public for the remainder of this week. This is not a decision we take lightly, but we recognise the need to pause. The temporary closure will allow us to prioritise the safety and wellbeing of our staff and partners, and to create space for reflection.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"pt-dp-p font-text-light font-light text-lg leading-normal tracking-wide mb-base last:mb-0\" itemprop=\"text\">It continues: \u201cWe understand the strength of feeling being expressed by our community, and we remain committed to engaging with this moment thoughtfully.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"pt-dp-p font-text-light font-light text-lg leading-normal tracking-wide mb-base last:mb-0\" itemprop=\"text\">On Wednesday, the Scotland-based artists Lisette May Monroe and Adrien Howard published an <a class=\"transition-colors duration-default shadow-externalLink hover:text-blue-900\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DLUnSans6H3\/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link&amp;igsh=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">open letter<\/a> to the CCA Director, board members and chair. They said: \u201cWe are stunned by this response and are left questioning what the CCA stands for as an \u2018open source\u2019 space? What protections does it actually offer the practices of the artists and the communities it serves?\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"pt-dp-p font-text-light font-light text-lg leading-normal tracking-wide mb-base last:mb-0\" itemprop=\"text\">They urge the CCA to listen to the 800 artists who have signed a petition, along with CCA staff, to back the cultural boycott. They say: \u201cThe people in our community and your own workers are asking you to endorse PACBI and actively support the people of Palestine. Please listen.
