Sir Keir Starmer<\/a>\u2019s plan to send failed asylum seekers<\/a> abroad shows post-Brexit<\/a> Britain is in \u201ca very dark place\u201d, Albania<\/a>\u2019s prime minister<\/a> has warned. <\/p>\n In a blistering attack, Edi Rama<\/a> said the prime minister<\/a> was \u201clooking for places to dump migrants\u201d – a plan that would have been inconceivable a decade ago. <\/p>\n He said Brexit had ushered in a shift in public discourse,<\/a> which means the \u201ctotally unacceptable, totally ridiculous, totally shameful\u201d are now normalised. <\/p>\n open image in gallery<\/p>\n Sir Keir Starmer met Edi Rama in Albania last month (PA Wire)<\/p>\n And, in an interview with The Guardian, Mr Rama said: \u201cIt\u2019s one of those things that 10 years ago would simply have not been imaginable\u2026 that Britain would look for places to dump immigrants.<\/p>\n \u201cThe fact that today it\u2019s not just imaginable, it\u2019s happening, is not because of Keir Starmer or Rishi Sunak<\/a> doing something outrageous; it\u2019s because of the country being in a very dark place.\u201d<\/p>\n The socialist Albanian PM added: \u201cEighty per cent of the things that are said, or are written, or are accepted as a normal part of the discourse in today\u2019s Britain are things that [before Brexit] would have been totally unacceptable, totally ridiculous, totally shameful.\u201d <\/p>\n Mr Rama\u2019s interview comes a month after Sir Keir said Britain was in talks with a handful of countries over \u201creturn hubs\u201d for failed asylum seekers as part of the government\u2019s crackdown on small boats crossing the English Channel<\/a>. <\/p>\n The PM announced the plans while visiting Albania’s capital, Tirana<\/a>, but suffered a setback as Mr Rama insisted his country would not host one of the UK\u2019s planned hubs. <\/p>\n But, insisting his comments were not a dig at Sir Keir, he said his British counterpart is a \u201cvery decent and delightful person\u201d and that he has rejected similar plans under Mr Sunak and Boris Johnson<\/a> in the past. <\/p>\n Albania currently operates a similar returns hub programme with Italy. <\/p>\n open image in gallery<\/p>\n Edi Rama said he is loyal to his agreement with Italian PM Giorgia Meloni (Copyright 2023 The Associated Press.
