While it can increase the risk of frailty and other health issues, the good news is that it\u2019s never too late to rebuild strength.<\/p>\n<p>You don\u2019t need a gym membership or expensive equipment to get started. All you\u2019ll need is a chair, and if you like tracking your progress, one of the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tomsguide.com\/us\/best-fitness-trackers,review-2066.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.tomsguide.com\/us\/best-fitness-trackers,review-2066.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">best fitness trackers<\/a> can be a helpful bonus.<\/p>\n<p>The number of sets and reps varies for each exercise and is specified below the exercise title. Follow these guidelines closely so you\u2019re neither overdoing it nor slacking off. As Mitlo explains:<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The hold in this exercise is designed to add more <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tomsguide.com\/features\/time-under-tension-what-is-it-and-could-it-help-you-grow-muscle\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.tomsguide.com\/features\/time-under-tension-what-is-it-and-could-it-help-you-grow-muscle\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">time under tension<\/a>, which is a science-y word that means more tension on your muscles for extra time. It\u2019s how physical therapists teach patients to stand from the floor,&#8221; says Mitlo.<\/p>\n<p>For stability, she adds: &#8220;Make sure your front foot is either in front of your hip or out to the side. All you need is a stable surface like a chair, bed, or bench. &#8220;In just 20 seconds, you\u2019re working three different muscle groups,&#8221; says Mitlo.
