Tron has always been ahead of the curve. That\u2019s by design \u2013 if you\u2019re presenting the story of a mega-advanced virtual world, you need to be at the cutting edge. The 1982 original was exactly that, pioneering visual effects in service of a tale that predated the rise of\u2026 well, everything that\u2019s come since. Tron: Legacy<\/a> took that to the next level in 2010, taking a quantum leap in its conception of \u2018The Grid\u2019 with wild neon visuals, and delivering one of the first legacy sequels (hey, it\u2019s in the title) long before Hollywood got hooked on them. Now, here comes Tron: Ares<\/a> \u2013 a whole new evolution, set to propel audiences into a future they don\u2019t realise they\u2019re already hurtling towards.<\/p>\n

A new Tron means another gigantic step forward in creating the film\u2019s digital world. ILM is treating the process of working on Ares like it\u2019s \u201cthe Holy Grail of computer graphics\u201d, director Joachim R\u00f8nning tells Empire. Even in a saturated blockbuster landscape, he promises things audiences have never seen before, set to \u201celevate\u201d the world and take it \u201cto the next level\u201d \u2013 including motion-controlled camera movements on The Grid, designed as if the lens is operated by machine rather than man. \u201cThe concept was that a program is filming a program,\u201d he explains. \u201cSo it\u2019s shot by a robot.\u201d<\/p>\n

For original Tron creator Steven Lisberger, this kind of innovation is the name of the game. \u201cSomething comes out, and it\u2019s too avant-garde at the time. And then the real world catches up with it,\u201d he says, reflecting on the saga\u2019s legacy. Now, in Ares, the world of Tron will collide with our reality \u2013 bringing Light Cycles to city streets where they slice cars in half<\/a>. \u201cIt has become a symbol of our riding this technology that is going faster than we ever imagined,\u201d Lisberger says of Tron\u2019s most iconic visual. \u201cWe\u2019ve integrated into it, and the speed of it is mind-boggling. And in Ares, it\u2019s a metaphor for the fact that this technology is moving through every part of our reality.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ares is arriving right on time, then. With each passing day, artificial intelligence is encroaching on our everyday lives. \u201cThe movie touches all of these things,\u201d says Past Lives<\/a>\u2019 Greta Lee, who plays programmer Eve Kim. \u201cSo many days on set, we would get the chills, because the ideas that [Lisberger] put in place years ago are not just still relevant, but in our faces. Inescapable.\u201d There\u2019s never been a better time for Tron to return.<\/p>\n
