A new nature reserve in the Yorkshire Dales is set to restore temperate rainforest and provide a haven for wildlife in the process.<\/p>\n

Temperate rainforest \u2013 also known as Atlantic or Celtic rainforest \u2013 is characterised by high rainfall and\u00a0humidity, and stable temperatures. These rare woodlands support a variety of native trees such as sessile oak, birch, rowan, holly, alder, willow and hazel.<\/p>\n

Yorkshire Wildlife Trust says the reserve at Park Gill could offer crucial habitat for Red Squirrel, Pine Marten\u00a0and threatened bird species including Wood Warbler<\/a>,\u00a0Common Redstart<\/a> and Pied Flycatcher<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\nYorkshire Wildlife Trust hopes to attract Pied Flycatcher<\/a> to its\u00a0new nature reserve in the Yorkshire Dales\u00a0(David Atkinson).<\/p>\n

Wildlife haven<\/p>\n

“Woodland is at a premium in this part of the Dales,” said YWT’s north regional manager Jonathan Leadley. “Species such as\u00a0Black Grouse<\/a>, which still survive here, will benefit from more berry-bearing shrubs such as hawthorn.”<\/p>\n

He added: “This new reserve promises to be a haven for wildlife and a stunning place for people to enjoy.”<\/p>\n

At present, Park Gill has fragmented patches of temperate rainforest,\u00a0as well as limestone grassland, caves and streams.<\/p>\n
