We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.<\/p>\n<p><strong class=\"sc-1uza6dc-1 huxBsk\">Your support makes all the difference.<\/strong>Read more<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. economy shrank by 0.5% in the first quarter of 2025, between January and March, as two earlier estimates were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/world\/americas\/jpmorgan-ceo-warning-economy-b2768476.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">revised downward<\/a> by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/commerce-department\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Commerce Department<\/a>\u2019s Bureau of Economic Analysis. <\/p>\n<p>Looming fears about the extent of President <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/donald-trump\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Donald Trump<\/a>\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/donald-trump-keir-starmer-alberta-howard-lutnick-european-union-b2771176.html\" title=\"US and UK announce a trade deal, but steel imports are still being negotiated\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">trade war on American trading partners<\/a> \u2014 announced on the so-called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/world\/americas\/us-politics\/trump-tariffs-liberation-day-lawsuit-goods-prices-b2760088.html\" title=\"Trump\u2019s \u2018Liberation day\u2019 gets axed: Here are the goods free from tariffs and the products still facing price hikes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cLiberation Day\u201d of April 2<\/a> \u2014 saw a surge of imports as U.S. companies and households rushed to buy foreign goods before Trump could impose tariffs on them.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/commerce-department\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Commerce Department<\/a>, headed by Secretary <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/howard-lutnick\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Howard Lutnick<\/a>, previously estimated that the economy fell 0.2% in the first quarter. Economists had forecast no change in the department\u2019s third and final estimate, so the deterioration from earlier data was unexpected.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/gross-domestic-product\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Gross domestic product<\/a> (GDP) measures the nation\u2019s output of goods and services, and these are the first figures for Trump\u2019s second term, reversing a 2.4% increase in the last three months of 2024 during the final months of President <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/joe-biden\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Joe Biden<\/a>\u2019s administration.<\/p>\n<p>The data shows that for the first time in three years, the economy contracted \u2014 the last time being in the first quarter of 2022.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/GDP_98714.jpg\"  loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"A shopper pushes a cart past a display of soups in a Costco warehouse in Sheridan, Colorado\" class=\"sc-1mc30lb-0 ggpMaE inline-gallery-btn\"\/><\/p>\n<p>open image in gallery<\/p>\n<p>A shopper pushes a cart past a display of soups in a Costco warehouse in Sheridan, Colorado (Copyright 2025 The Associated Press. All rights reserved.)<\/p>\n<p>If the economy contracts for a second consecutive quarter (April through June), then the U.S. will officially be in a recession \u2014 preliminary data will be available on July 30.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/consumer-spending\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Consumer spending<\/a> has slowed sharply, expanding just 0.5%, down from a robust 4% in the fourth quarter of 2024 and a sharp downgrade from the Commerce Department\u2019s previous estimate of 1.2%. <\/p>\n<p>A boost from pre-emptive buying of goods ahead of the imposition of import duties, especially on motor vehicles, faded.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/government-spending\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Government spending<\/a> decreased by 0.6% compared to the prior quarter, with a 4.6% decline in federal spending partially offset by a 2% increase in spending by state and local governments.<\/p>\n<p>In the first quarter of 2025, imports expanded by 37.9%, the fastest growth since 2020, and contributed to a decline in GDP of nearly 4.7 percentage points.<\/p>\n<p>When calculating GDP, imports are subtracted because the metric aims to measure domestic production and spending on goods made domestically, not abroad, whether by businesses or consumers. Including imports would artificially inflate the domestic economy.<\/p>\n<p>Domestic demand growth, a category within the GDP data that measures the economy\u2019s underlying strength, rose at a 1.9% annual rate from January through March. While that&#8217;s a robust number, it\u2019s down from 2.9% in the fourth quarter of 2024 and from the Commerce Department\u2019s previous estimate of 2.5% growth for the January-March period.<\/p>\n<p>Ryan Sweet of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/oxford-economics\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Oxford Economics<\/a> told the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/economy-tariffs-trump-gdp-shrink-86d1f15e66c646ac4ce88ffc0a956942\">Associated Press<\/a> that the downgrade in that figure was \u201ctroubling,\u2033 though he doesn\u2019t expect to make a significant change to his near-term economic forecast.<\/p>\n<p>If there is any positive news ahead for the Trump administration, it is that the first-quarter surge in imports probably won&#8217;t happen again in the April-June quarter and therefore shouldn\u2019t impact GDP.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/mornings-with-maria-bartiromo-(4).jpg\"  loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"JP Morgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon says economists are correct that the economy will experience a slowdown and that he personally thinks a recession is \" likely.=\"\" class=\"sc-1mc30lb-0 ggpMaE inline-gallery-btn\"\/><\/p>\n<p>open image in gallery<\/p>\n<p>JP Morgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon says economists are correct that the economy will experience a slowdown and that he personally thinks a recession is &#8220;likely.&#8221; (Fox Business Network)<\/p>\n<p>In fact, economists expect second-quarter growth to bounce back to 3%, according to a survey of forecasters by the data firm FactSet. The Atlanta Federal Reserve is forecasting GDP to accelerate at a 3.4% rate this quarter.<\/p>\n<p>However, given the fluctuations in imports, economists warned against interpreting the expected rebound in GDP as a sign of economic strength.
