{"id":216720,"date":"2025-06-26T20:00:24","date_gmt":"2025-06-26T20:00:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/216720\/"},"modified":"2025-06-26T20:00:24","modified_gmt":"2025-06-26T20:00:24","slug":"cyclist-pelted-with-egg-by-passing-car-passenger-in-unprovoked-assault-but-gets-accused-of-riding-in-the-middle-of-the-road-on-social-media","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/216720\/","title":{"rendered":"Cyclist pelted with egg by passing car passenger in \u201cunprovoked assault\u201d \u2013 but gets accused of \u201criding in the middle of the road\u201d on social media"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>A cyclist has appealed for information after a car passenger threw an egg at him, hitting him in the back, in an alleged \u201cunprovoked assault\u201d last week \u2013 which he says could have had \u201cfar worse consequences\u201d if a less experienced cyclist had been targeted.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The incident, captured on the cyclist\u2019s\u00a0camera, attached to a neck strap,\u00a0took place on Monday 16 June, at around 2.30pm on Ditton Lane, in the north-east of Cambridge, as the driver of a Land Rover Freelander passed the rider on the busy road heading into the city centre.<\/p>\n<p>In the video, as the car passes, a passenger can be seen throwing an egg in the direction of the cyclist, the egg first striking him on the back before falling to the road and smashing. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The cyclist, who while wishing to remain anonymous goes by the username \u2018al_eye_am\u2019 or \u2018Thank me for cycling\u2019 on Twitter\/X, can be heard in the video saying, \u201cHe threw something at me\u201d.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>And speaking to road.cc, the rider admitted that he \u201chad no idea what had been thrown until I returned home and viewed the video\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was mildly destabilised, but had the egg hit me on the back of the head, or had they hit a less skilled or experienced cyclist, then the assault could have had far worse consequences,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNext time it might be someone else, and they might not stay upright, and end up under the car\u2019s wheels.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He continued: \u201cI don\u2019t suppose I was the only target for the day. It was entirely unprovoked, and I had not seen or interacted with the vehicle or occupants beforehand.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" typeof=\"foaf:Image\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/cyclist-hit-egg-car-passenger-3.jpg\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"lazyload\" itemprop=\"image\" width=\"970\" height=\"720\" alt=\"Cyclist hit with egg by car passenger \" title=\"Cyclist hit with egg by car passenger \"\/>Cyclist hit with egg by car passenger  (credit: @al_eye_am on Twitter\/X)<\/p>\n<p>Following the egg-throwing incident, the cyclist then caught up with the vehicle at a set of traffic lights, as its driver and passengers stare at him.<\/p>\n<p>The cyclist then tells the car\u2019s occupants: \u201cGood move, you\u2019re on a camera \u2013 well done\u201d, prompting the egg-throwing passenger to wind down his window and reply, \u201cWhat?\u201d before the motorist drives off.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI doubt that anyone carries one \u2018fresh\u2019 egg, more like six, 12, or even 48, depending on the source,\u201d the cyclist says. \u201cI hope my verbal interaction gave the offender pause for thought, and he did not throw any more as the car moved into the city.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The cyclist then reported the incident to Cambridgeshire Constabulary, who told road.cc that they have attempted to identify the person who threw the egg, though no arrests have yet been made.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe police have \u2018filed\u2019 the case pending identification of the driver, but how aggressive their search will be, I can\u2019t say,\u201d the cyclist continues.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI verbally suggested to the police that they seek to identify the driver, as there is, in my opinion, a responsibility on the driver\u2019s shoulders to prevent his passengers misbehaving, and they could theoretically ascertain the name of the offender,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou will also see in the video what appears to be an unrestrained child standing in the rear passenger footwell.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" typeof=\"foaf:Image\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/cyclist-hit-egg-car-passenger-2.jpg\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"lazyload\" itemprop=\"image\" width=\"970\" height=\"658\" alt=\"Cyclist hit with egg by car passenger\" title=\"Cyclist hit with egg by car passenger\"\/>Cyclist hit with egg by car passenger (credit: @al_eye_am on Twitter\/X)<\/p>\n<p>However, as noted by the rider, the vehicle\u2019s tax expired on 6 May, calling into question the up-to-date nature of the car\u2019s registration, and \u201cwhether the DVLA has been kept informed about its ownership\u201d \u2013 making the police\u2019s task tracking down the culprit somewhat trickier, he says.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe digital evidence team of Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire. and Hertfordshire police, to whom I regularly submit journey camera footage of handheld phone usage and other offences, are very good, and usually advise that they will take \u2018positive action\u2019 against a road user I have reported,\u201d he adds.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe quality of cameras available has much to do with this \u2013 with the advent of 360\u00b0 journey cameras there are few hiding places for offending drivers \u2013 and so the footage obtained is routinely clear and indisputable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/road.cc\/content\/news\/passenger-lobbed-hair-gel-cyclist-moving-car-298721\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>&gt;\u00a0Car passenger fined for lobbing tub of hair gel at cyclist from moving vehicle<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Not that some social media users found this latest egg-related incident clear and indisputable, however.<\/p>\n<p>An edited version of the above video, posted on X this week by the cyclist, has been viewed over 20,000 times, attracting dozens of comments.<\/p>\n<p>And while many were shocked by the passenger\u2019s actions, with one user describing him as a \u201cnasty idiot\u201d and \u201ctotally out of order\u201d, others were scathingly critical of the cyclist\u2019s decision to report the matter to the police, along with \u2013 bizarrely \u2013 his positioning on the road when the alleged assault took place.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSurely the police have much more pressing issues than an egg being thrown,\u201d wrote Ollie. \u201cThey\u2019d be absolutely drowning in calls on Halloween if this is what they have to deal with.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy bad,\u201d the cyclist replied. \u201cIf the police are reading this, they can ignore all reports of assault, and if an egg hits a moving cyclist on the back of the head and knocks him or her into traffic on the next occasion, they can say \u2018That\u2019s okay, as Ollie says so\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis was a regular past time as kids in the 70s! We would get drop them from a pedestrian bridge! Now it\u2019s a police matter?\u201d added Paul, prompting the rider to respond: \u201cAssault always was\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" typeof=\"foaf:Image\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/cyclist-hit-egg-car-passenger-4.jpg\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"lazyload\" itemprop=\"image\" width=\"970\" height=\"688\" alt=\"Cyclist hit with egg by car passenger\" title=\"Cyclist hit with egg by car passenger\"\/>Cyclist hit with egg by car passenger (credit: @al_eye_am on Twitter\/X)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLike the non-incident close passes cyclists whinge about, nothing happened here either,\u201d said another.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLooks like you attract attention on purpose by cycling in the middle of the road like a twat.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The cyclist again responded by showing the Twitter user \u2013 who later reverted to claiming he was riding in the middle of the \u2018lane\u2019 \u2013 a still from his video, showing him clearly riding close to the kerb and hedge.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen silence!\u201d the cyclist told road.cc.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/road.cc\/content\/news\/cyclist-pushed-and-seriously-injured-car-passenger-309151\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>&gt;\u00a0Cyclist seriously injured by car passenger who pushed rider off bike<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Reflecting on his decision to report the incident to the police, despite the criticism of some pro-motoring accounts on Twitter, he said: \u201cI do not want this happening to another cyclist or pedestrian, especially without consequences.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When approached for comment by road.cc, a spokesperson for Cambridgeshire Constabulary said that anyone with information related to the identity of the egg-throwing passenger should <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cambs.police.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">contact the police through its website<\/a>, using reference 35\/44509\/25, or by calling 101.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe were contacted on 16 June with reports a man was struck with an egg whilst cycling on Ditton Lane, Cambridge,\u201d the spokesperson said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe egg was thrown by a passenger of a Land Rover Freelander at about 2.30pm.
