If it was looking for our members anywhere like it is in Birmingham, with a quarter of wages being cut, then of course there would be a response. And then it would be up to members to vote, but it\u2019s not inconceivable.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA lot of the funding for local authorities isn\u2019t sorted, and then you [could] have austerity basically come back in and people\u2019s wages start to be cut again. A lot of towns\u2019 responses are going to be people wanting to fight against that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" id=\"3a558\" data-rm-shortcode-id=\"8980256eeaba7194ef2b122968a40cf5\" data-rm-shortcode-name=\"rebelmouse-image\" class=\"rm-shortcode rm-lazyloadable-image \" lazy-loadable=\"true\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns='http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg'%20viewBox='0%200%206000%204000'%3E%3C\/svg%3E\" data-runner-src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/birmingham-rubbish.jpg\" width=\"6000\" height=\"4000\" alt=\"Birmingham rubbish\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Bin workers are poised to strike across the country, union sources have warned<\/p>\n<p>PA<\/p>\n<p>Workers in Birmingham have overwhelmingly rejected a second offer from the council as their industrial action continues.<\/p>\n<p>The dispute in Birmingham began after the council removed the role of waste recycling and collection officer.<\/p>\n<p>Unite claims this will leave 150 workers about \u00a38,000 out of pocket. The council disputes these figures, saying fewer employees will be affected and they will lose significantly less money.<\/p>\n<p>Birmingham council moved to cut costs after effectively declaring itself bankrupt in 2023.<\/p>\n<p>The council has been blamed for mishandling an equal pay dispute that has cost nearly \u00a31.1 billion since 2012.<\/p>\n<p>The row marks the latest clash between Labour and unions, with the Government facing accusations of being in hock to its &#8220;paymasters&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><strong>MORE LIKE THIS:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Kevin Hollinrake, the shadow local government secretary, called the situation a &#8220;total mess&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>He said: &#8220;It shows the impotence of Rayner and Starmer, and their unwillingness to do anything about it. They&#8217;re the puppets of the unions, and they obviously have no influence over the puppet master.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Angela Rayner had pleaded with union bosses to accept the deal.<\/p>\n<p>Similar disputes have emerged in Yorkshire and Cambridgeshire, with Unite staff in Sheffield already on strike.<\/p>\n<p>Peterborough and Sheffield are among the cities at greatest risk of disruption should bin strikes escalate.
