Of the myriad nations that make up the team, four – Trinidad & Tobago, Guyana, Jamaica, and Barbados – were the dominant sides. Their first home series, against England in 1929/30, can be used to elaborate on this rivalry: not only were the four Tests played in four countries but they also had four separate local captains.

Also play: Quiz! How well do you know the West Indies captains?

To add to that, every captain needed to be White. That began to change after the Second World War amidst socio-political changes. For the 1947/48 series, they named George Headley as their first Black captain – but for only the first and fourth Tests. Gerry Gomez and John Goddard, both White, were named for the other two.

Also play: Quiz! His successors, Jeffrey Stollmeyer, Denis Atkinson, Gerry Alexander – were all White. However, following a crusade led by political activist CLR James, Frank Worrell became the first Black cricketer to become a full-time, bona-fide West Indies captain.
