More traffic diversions are in place as emergency services continue to remain at the scene of a security alert in the Waterside area of Londonderry which has seen a primary school and commercial premises evacuated.<\/p>\n
Earlier this afternoon, police said officers are investigating a \u201csuspicious device\u201d reported to the PSNI in the Trench Road area of the city.<\/p>\n
Police said the report was made to them at around 11.20am this morning and a cordon has been put in place at Knockwellan Park. <\/p>\n
A number of homes have also been impacted.<\/p>\n
In an updated statement, police confirmed several cordons are now place around the area. <\/p>\n
“The security alert on Trench Road in Derry\/Londonderry continues with traffic diversions now in place in the vicinity of Hollymount Park, and on Trench Road at the junction with St. Brecan’s Park.<\/p>\n
“A cordon also remains in place at Knockwellan Park. Police remain on scene, please follow their direction.<\/p>\n
“A number of commercial premises in the area have been evacuated, in addition to homes in Knockwellan Park, as well as in Cromkill Place as part of the public safety operation.<\/p>\n
“We understand the disruption this has caused, especially for those directly impacted.<\/p>\n
\u201cHillcrest Trust Community Centre is open as a rest centre. We will keep you updated.\u201d<\/p>\n
PSNI Chief Inspector Pearce said: “We understand the disruption and inconvenience this is causing, in particular for the school community and all parents and residents affected.<\/p>\n
“We want to reassure everyone we are working our way through this situation as quickly as possible and appreciate the co-operation and patience from the school community and the public as we do so.<\/p>\n
