{"id":217204,"date":"2025-06-27T00:16:22","date_gmt":"2025-06-27T00:16:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/217204\/"},"modified":"2025-06-27T00:16:22","modified_gmt":"2025-06-27T00:16:22","slug":"historic-cinema-named-the-best-in-wales","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/217204\/","title":{"rendered":"Historic cinema named the best in Wales"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>                            <img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/Brynamman-Public-Hall-Cinema.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1000\" height=\"667\" class=\"size-full wp-image-245301\"  \/>Brynamman Public Hall Cinema<\/p>\n<p>The top cinemas in Wales have been ranked and rated with the best cinema being revealed \u2013 and it\u2019s the independent picture houses that rate the highest.<\/p>\n<p>According to Tripadvisor reviews Brynamman Public Hall Cinema is the best cinema in Wales, with an impressive average score of 4.62 out of five.<\/p>\n<p>Blackwood\u2019s Maxime Cinema and the Market Hall Cinema in Brynmawr also make up some of the nation\u2019s best cinemas Vue Cinema Carmarthen is the worst-rated nationwide on Tripadvisor, scoring 2.52.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.climateaction.gov.wales\/green-choices\/?utm_source=online&amp;utm_medium=nation_cymru&amp;utm_campaign=sbw_caw_mygreenchoices_mayjune25_eng\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/CAW049319-STATIC-IMAGES-NATION-CYMRU.jpg\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The video production experts at Wonderpunch analysed data from Tripadvisor on 32 cinemas across Wales. <\/p>\n<p>An average rating out of five was calculated for each cinema based on all existing reviews, with an extra 20 three-star reviews added per cinema to help balance the data for locations with fewer reviews. Only cinemas with at least 20 reviews from users were included in the final ranking.<\/p>\n<p>Brynamman Public Hall Cinema came out on top as Wales\u2019s best cinema, according to Tripadvisor. Dating back to the 1920s, the neoclassical cinema has an average rating of 4.62, higher than any other cinema in Wales. It has also gathered 94 five-star reviews, which make up over 90% of all the reviews.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/Brynamman-Public-Hall-Cinema-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1000\" height=\"750\" class=\"size-full wp-image-245300\"  \/>Brynamman Public Hall Cinema<\/p>\n<p>Blackwood\u2019s Maxime Cinema is the second highest-rated nationwide, averaging 4.60 out of five. An independent venue showing wide-release films, Maxime Cinema ranks high thanks to 391 perfect five-star reviews from visitors.<\/p>\n<p>Market Hall Cinema in Brynmawr takes third spot in the study. Wales\u2019 oldest cinema has an average rating of 4.59 based on 101 reviews, 93 of which are five-star.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/Market-Hall-Cinema-USE.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1000\" height=\"668\" class=\"size-full wp-image-65977\"  \/>The Market Hall Cinema in Brynmawr (Credit: Market Hall Cinema}<\/p>\n<p>Colwyn Bay\u2019s Theatr Colwyn and Scala Prestatyn Cinema in Prestatyn also rank high in fourth and fifth. Theatr Colwyn scores 4.41 out of five, while Scala Prestatyn Cinema is slightly lower with 4.34.<\/p>\n<p>The rest of the top 10 highest-rated cinemas are made up of Mwldan, Booth\u2019s Bookshop &amp; Cinema, Cinema &amp; Co.ffee in Swansea, Blaenau Ffestiniog\u2019s Cellb Cinema, and Gwyn Hall in Neath.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/Theatr_Colwyn_Colwyn_Bay_-_geograph.org_.uk_-_4851207.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1000\" height=\"650\" class=\"size-full wp-image-155836\"  \/>Theatr Colwyn, Colwyn Bay. Photo by Jaggery is licensed under CC BY-SA 2.0.<\/p>\n<p>Tristan Ramsay, director at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wonderpunch.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Wonderpunch<\/a>, said, \u201cThe study is dominated by Wales\u2019s independent and historic cinemas, suggesting that unique film theatres rich in character and history are valued highly by visitors.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile major blockbuster releases tend to bring the masses to cinemas, the venues steeped in heritage and with more personality may be what keeps regulars coming back.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.library.wales\/visit\/things-to-do\/exhibitions\/no-welsh-art\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/4776_NLW_No-Welsh-Art-Digital-Advert_Mar-2025_Land_V2_EN-1.jpg\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Of all the three largest cinema chains in the UK (Cineworld, Odeon, and Vue), Cineworld \u2013 Broughton has the highest average rating (4.10), followed by ODEON Wrexham Eagles Meadow (3.89).<\/p>\n<p>Vue Cinema Carmarthen is the worst-rated nationwide on Tripadvisor, scoring 2.52 based on 125 reviews. Vue Cinema Merthyr Tydfil and Vue Cinema Swansea also rank low with scores of 2.84 and 2.87, respectively.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Source:<\/strong> Tripadvisor<\/p>\n<p><strong>Methodology:<\/strong><br \/>Tripadvisor was scraped for 32 cinemas in Wales.<br \/>Each cinema was ranked based on the Bayesian rating.<br \/>The Bayesian rating was calculated by adding an extra 20 three-star reviews to each cinema, before working out an average out of five.
