Exports in most sectors have decreased since 2021, according to the report.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm168www500073b6kdphzi5hc@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThe study highlights that the negative impacts of (Brexit) have intensified over time, with 2023 showing more pronounced trade declines than previous years,\u201d the researchers wrote in the paper published Tuesday.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm168www500083b6k9984qycl@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThis suggests that the transition in UK-EU trade relations post-Brexit is not merely a short-term disruption but reflects deeper structural changes likely to persist.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm16atqjm0000356kwx3bxkth@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Britain\u2019s exit from the EU \u2014 following a divisive referendum in 2016 \u2014 was finalized on December 24, 2020, when the two sides finally agreed a trade deal.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm168www500093b6k0id7d35m@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The findings underscore the challenge Brexit poses to the Labour government\u2019s ambitions to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/07\/05\/economy\/uk-election-labour-party-economy\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">kickstart economic growth<\/a>, its top priority since taking power following a national election in July.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm168viww00003b6ku92hk2mp@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer said this week that he would prioritize economic growth in the government\u2019s upcoming budget, due to be unveiled next month, though he has ruled out rejoining the EU single market or customs union \u2014 measures that could help with that goal.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1693lex000u3b6kkqokw74t@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            According to official figures, exports, split roughly equally between goods and services, make up almost a third of UK gross domestic product and the EU accounts for 48% of the country\u2019s goods exports.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm16ci8060003356kah4y2w7s@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThe UK-EU trade relationship remains crucial for both parties,\u201d Tuesday\u2019s report said, adding that the relationship\u00a0\u201cunderpins\u201d economic\u00a0stability and\u00a0growth.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm168www5000g3b6kai66wlsx@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The report shows a steep reduction in the variety of British goods exported to the EU, with small businesses in industries such as food and clothing often among those abandoning exports due to increased costs and red tape.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm168www5000f3b6kvdnmizz0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            According to the study\u2019s lead author, Professor Jun Du, the post-Brexit trade deal has \u201cintroduced substantial barriers\u201d to UK-EU trade.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm168www5000i3b6kpmyp7mo5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            To improve trade ties, the researchers recommend the government prioritize \u201csector-specific\u201d agreements in areas such as agriculture, streamline customs procedures using digital technology and ensure closer regulatory alignment with the EU.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm168www5000j3b6kj1r16upw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWithout urgent policy interventions, the UK\u2019s economic position and place in the global market will continue to weaken,\u201d Du said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm169agol00113b6k6ibu92oo@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The report is the latest piece of research to highlight the negative effects Brexit has had on the UK economy.
