nuclear weapons.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">In March, US Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard said the country&#8217;s &#8220;intelligence community continued to assess that Iran is not building a nuclear weapon&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Last Wednesday, before the US bombed Iran&#8217;s nuclear sites, President Donald Trump said <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-06-21\/donald-trump-says-tulsi-gabbard-wrong-on-iran-nuclear-program\/105445142\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/105445142\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ms Gabbard, and the US intelligence community, were wrong<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Loading&#8230;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The justification for Israel launching its attacks on Tehran two weeks ago was based on a report from the International Atomic Energy Agency.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">It found that <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-06-12\/iaea-finds-iran-in-breach-its-nuclear-obligations\/105411014\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/105411014\" (Supplied: Maxar Technologies)<\/p>\n<p>Is it possible Iran moved its enriched uranium before the strikes?<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">There are no clear answers about whether Iran moved its enriched uranium before the US struck the three nuclear sites.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) report detailed that Tehran had amassed 408.6kg of uranium enriched up to 60 per cent.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Iran has claimed about 400kg of it was moved before the US dropped the so-called &#8220;bunker-buster&#8221; (AFP: Getty Images\/STF)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Earlier this week, former home affairs secretary Mike Pezzullo \u2014 who would have a good grasp of how these facilities worked \u2014 told the ABC it was &#8220;possible&#8221; the US used the facilities under the &#8220;full knowledge and concurrence&#8221; framework adopted by both countries.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-06-19\/iran-israel-united-states-australia-involvement-richard-marles\/105421214\" class=\"RelatedCard_link__rsgR9 FullBleedLink_root__lTw_U interactive_focusContext__yRhc_ interactive_defaults__AKxUU FullBleedLink_showVisited__g3Xvz\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">&#8216;Knowledge&#8217; of what US forces aim at Iran doesn&#8217;t mean Australia is uninvolved<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP RelatedCard_synopsis__cFwMW Typography_sizeMobile14__u7TGe Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Australians have every right to feel confused and concerned.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;It&#8217;s hard to say from the outside but you&#8217;d have to think that to the extent that the Americans had a pre-existing concurrence from the Australian government to use those facilities for whatever purposes they deem necessary, it&#8217;s possible [they did],&#8221; Mr Pezzullo said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;But I wouldn&#8217;t want to speculate.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Still, he said <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-06-22\/trump-situation-room-photos-israel-iran-us\/105447044\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/105447044\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the fact the bombers travelled east from the US across the Atlantic<\/a> to Iran, rather than west over the Pacific, meant there was probably &#8220;less scope&#8221; for involvement from the facilities in Australia.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;On that direction of travel, there&#8217;s the likelihood of lesser Australian potential involvement, but beyond that, I really wouldn&#8217;t want to speculate,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">It is worth noting, however, that the bombers were not the only American military assets involved in the attacks: for example, US submarines also fired 30 cruise missiles at two of Iran&#8217;s other nuclear sites.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">But again \u2014 it is simply not clear if any of the facilities in Australia helped them coordinate or carry out those strikes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\"><a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"#backtotop\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/105457264\">Back to top.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Will the ceasefire hold?<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Israel and Iran both agreed to adhere to the ceasefire, but said they would respond with force to any breach.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">For now, it appears the strikes have stopped and the US has said it is set to hold talks next week with Iran about its nuclear program.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Some analysts believe the ceasefire will hold because Iran has been weakened and needs an off-ramp.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">But the big question is whether long-lasting peace is possible.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Ali Mamouri, Middle East studies research fellow at Deakin University, said Israel claimed to have achieved the bulk of its objectives for the war.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">But with the extent of <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-06-26\/iran-running-to-nuclear-bomb-after-ceasefire-analysts-say\/105461634\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/105461634\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">damage to Iran&#8217;s nuclear program not fully known, volatility remained.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Both sides could remain locked in a volatile stand-off over Iran&#8217;s nuclear program, with the conflict potentially reigniting whenever either side perceives a strategic opportunity,&#8221; he wrote in the Conversation.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A high-rise building seen from the street.
