{"id":218918,"date":"2025-06-27T15:20:11","date_gmt":"2025-06-27T15:20:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/218918\/"},"modified":"2025-06-27T15:20:11","modified_gmt":"2025-06-27T15:20:11","slug":"eu-commission-to-stage-workshop-in-effort-to-push-companies-to-sign-ai-code","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/218918\/","title":{"rendered":"EU Commission to stage workshop in effort to push companies to sign AI Code"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n         Published on<br \/>\n            27\/06\/2025 &#8211; 16:44 GMT+2<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"c-ad__placeholder__logo\" src=\"https:\/\/static.euronews.com\/website\/images\/logos\/logo-euronews-grey-6-180x22.svg\" width=\"180\" height=\"22\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/>ADVERTISEMENT<\/p>\n<p>The European Commission will next week stage a workshop in an effort try to convince companies to sign the Code of Practice on general-purpose AI (GPAI) before it enters into force on 2 August, according to a document seen by Euronews.<\/p>\n<p>The Code of Practice on GPAI, a voluntary set of rules, aims to help providers of AI models, such as ChatGPT and Gemini, comply with the EU\u2019s AI Act.\u00a0The final version of the Code was set to come out early May but has been delayed.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The workshop, organised by the Commission\u2019s AI Office, will discuss the final code of practice, as well as \u201cbenefits of signing the Code\u201d, according to the internal document.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0In September 2024\u00a0the Commission appointed\u00a0thirteen experts to draft the rules, using plenary sessions and workshops to gather feedback.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The process has been criticised throughout, by tech giants as well as <a href=\"https:\/\/eur03.safelinks.protection.outlook.com\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.euronews.com%2Fnext%2F2025%2F01%2F28%2Fgenerative-ai-code-contradicts-copyright-law-industry-says&amp;data=05%7C02%7Ccynthia.kroet%40euronews.com%7C3b14b05b4192444ebe1c08ddb586d41c%7Ce59fa28a32ed49aca5a09c46118cfecf%7C0%7C0%7C638866312864582257%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJFbXB0eU1hcGkiOnRydWUsIlYiOiIwLjAuMDAwMCIsIlAiOiJXaW4zMiIsIkFOIjoiTWFpbCIsIldUIjoyfQ%3D%3D%7C0%7C%7C%7C&amp;sdata=PbyOvh5nstLB5ev%2BsyxGstrEDv%2FEM%2FlWHKuVaSHzJVg%3D&amp;reserved=0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">publishers <\/a>and rights-holders concerned that the rules violate\u00a0the EU\u2019s Copyright laws. <\/p>\n<p>The US government\u2019s Mission to the EU sent a letter to the EU executive pushing back against the Code in April, claiming that it stifles innovation. In addition, Meta\u2019s global policy chief, Joel Kaplan, <a href=\"https:\/\/eur03.safelinks.protection.outlook.com\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.euronews.com%2Fnext%2F2025%2F02%2F05%2Fmeta-top-official-warns-penalising-us-companies-will-not-make-eu-competitive&amp;data=05%7C02%7Ccynthia.kroet%40euronews.com%7C3b14b05b4192444ebe1c08ddb586d41c%7Ce59fa28a32ed49aca5a09c46118cfecf%7C0%7C0%7C638866312864615996%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJFbXB0eU1hcGkiOnRydWUsIlYiOiIwLjAuMDAwMCIsIlAiOiJXaW4zMiIsIkFOIjoiTWFpbCIsIldUIjoyfQ%3D%3D%7C0%7C%7C%7C&amp;sdata=14e4EwesZ1uDZj2Aj70A6uqiKAMaOQ7BtD4rfwkTtc4%3D&amp;reserved=0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">sa<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/eur03.safelinks.protection.outlook.com\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.euronews.com%2Fnext%2F2025%2F02%2F05%2Fmeta-top-official-warns-penalising-us-companies-will-not-make-eu-competitive&amp;data=05%7C02%7Ccynthia.kroet%40euronews.com%7C3b14b05b4192444ebe1c08ddb586d41c%7Ce59fa28a32ed49aca5a09c46118cfecf%7C0%7C0%7C638866312864630707%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJFbXB0eU1hcGkiOnRydWUsIlYiOiIwLjAuMDAwMCIsIlAiOiJXaW4zMiIsIkFOIjoiTWFpbCIsIldUIjoyfQ%3D%3D%7C0%7C%7C%7C&amp;sdata=QnifO2IW2T61a%2BgeOWHqmtVsMrZnxDJk3vGlkA62k8E%3D&amp;reserved=0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">id<\/a>\u00a0in February that it will not sign the Code because it took issue\u00a0with the then latest version.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>An EU official told Euronews in May, that US companies \u201care very proactive\u201d and there was sense that \u201cthey are pulling back because of a change in the administration\u201d, following the trade tensions between the US and EU.<\/p>\n<p>Euronews <a href=\"https:\/\/www.euronews.com\/next\/2025\/05\/30\/us-tech-giants-ask-european-commission-for-simplest-possible-ai-code\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported <\/a>last month that US tech giants Amazon, IBM, Google, Meta, Microsoft and OpenAI have called upon the EU executive to keep its Code \u201cas simple as possible\u201d,\u00a0to avoid redundant reporting and unnecessary administrative burdens\u201d. <\/p>\n<p>A spokesperson for the European Commission previously said the Code will appear before early August, when the rules on GPAI tools enter into force.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Commission will assess companies\u2019 intentions to sign the code, and carry out an adequacy assessment with the member states.
