{"id":219350,"date":"2025-06-27T19:08:10","date_gmt":"2025-06-27T19:08:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/219350\/"},"modified":"2025-06-27T19:08:10","modified_gmt":"2025-06-27T19:08:10","slug":"defense-drives-russias-industrial-growth-as-civilian-production-contracts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/219350\/","title":{"rendered":"Defense Drives Russia\u2019s Industrial Growth as Civilian Production Contracts"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Russia\u2019s industrial sector, fueled by the defense sector, grew by 1.6% in May and 1.8% over the last year after accounting for seasonal factors, state statistics service Rosstat has <a href=\"https:\/\/rosstat.gov.ru\/storage\/mediabank\/94_25-06-2025.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The results come as civilian industries have reported widespread contractions, leading analysts to warn that Russia\u2019s economy has become disproportionately driven by the military-industrial complex in the fourth year of its invasion of Ukraine.<\/p>\n<p>Tverdye Tsifr (\u201cHard Numbers\u201d), a Telegram channel that reports on financial data, <a href=\"https:\/\/t.me\/xtxixty\/5412\">noted <\/a>a 42% surge in the output of \u201cmiscellaneous transport equipment\u201d and a 14% increase in finished metal products over the last month, compensating for weaker performance in March and April.<\/p>\n<p>Clothing production increased by 12%, and production of electronic and optical products, computers and pharmaceuticals rose by 9%.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Analysts at Raiffeisenbank <a href=\"https:\/\/t.me\/RaifFocusPocus\/4126\">estimated<\/a> that the machinery-building sector expanded by 7%, while all the other parts of the industrial sector contracted by a combined 0.4%.<\/p>\n<p>Analysts from Russia\u2019s largest private bank Alfa-Bank <a href=\"https:\/\/alfabank.ru\/alfa-investor\/t\/obzor-fondovogo-rynka-26-06-25-investitsionnyy-bank\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">described<\/a> the May results as evidence of a highly segmented economy.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Previously, \u201cwhen civilian growth was weak and defense growth was robust, all sectors expanded to some degree,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/t.me\/russianmacro\/21218?single\">wrote<\/a> MMI, a Telegram channel that analyzes Russian and global microstatistics, of the new divergence between military and civilian industry.<br \/>\u201cNow, all civilian industries have recorded declines, while defense output has accelerated. There are not enough resources to go around for everyone, so someone has to cut back,\u201d it said.<\/p>\n<p>Analysts from Promsvyazbank <a href=\"https:\/\/t.me\/macroresearch\/10383\">noted<\/a> a third consecutive month of declining industrial prices.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Rosstat <a href=\"https:\/\/rosstat.gov.ru\/storage\/mediabank\/92_25-06-2025.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a> that the producer price index for industrial goods shrank by 1.3% in May and by 2.8% since the start of the year.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A sustained decline in industrial prices, Promsvyazbank warned, \u201csignals the real economy\u2019s diminished resilience to high interest rates.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Tverdye Tsifr placed the seasonally adjusted drop in automobile production for May at 4%, wood products at 3% and rubber and plastics at 2%.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>For the year, Rosstat data showed a 13.7% decrease in the production of cars and trailers, a 3.2% decline in furniture output, clothing down by 2.3% and output of rubber and plastics and wood products falling by 3.4% and 1.9%, respectively.<\/p>\n<p>Production of leather goods dropped by 16.9%, while food and beverage output decreased by 0.9% and 3.3%.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>According to the government-affiliated CMACP analytical center, industrial growth has been mostly concentrated in the defense sector, with civilian industries remaining stagnant since mid-2023.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Deputy Prime Minister for Agriculture Dmitry Patrushev <a href=\"https:\/\/www.interfax.ru\/russia\/1027992\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">attributed<\/a> this to \u201cincreased working capital costs resulting from the current key interest rate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Raffaisenbank also argued that industrial output is constrained by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbr.ru\/eng\/press\/keypr\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Central Bank\u2019s<\/a> 20% interest rate.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe strong ruble and the Central Bank\u2019s interest rate [are factors] making credit resources more expensive for enterprises, thereby cooling economic activity and reducing domestic demand,\u201d the bank wrote in a Telegram post.\u00a0<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Russia\u2019s industrial sector, fueled by the defense sector, grew by 1.6% in May and 1.8% over the last&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":219351,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[3090],"tags":[51,473,1700,806,16,15],"class_list":{"0":"post-219350","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-economy","8":"tag-business","9":"tag-defense","10":"tag-economy","11":"tag-industry","12":"tag-uk","13":"tag-united-kingdom"},"share_on_mastodon":{"url":"https:\/\/pubeurope.com\/@uk\/114756904970939485","error":""},"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/219350","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=219350"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/219350\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/219351"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=219350"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=219350"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=219350"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
