A major new architecture project is set to create the ‘world’s largest wooden city’.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Stockholm Wood City<\/a> will be built in Sickla, a suburb located just south of the Swedish capital.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The new city will cover a whopping 250,000 sqm\/269,097,7 sqft with 2,000 homes and 7,000 office spaces.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Construction began in 2024 and the first buildings are set to be completed by the end of 2025.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Local developer Atrium Ljungberg says the wooden metropolis has been designed as a five-minute city with all its amenities just a short walk from each other.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Atrium Ljungberg says: ‘In Sickla, everything you need is just a five-minute walk away.\u00a0<\/p>\n

‘Discover Sweden<\/a>‘s third largest shopping centre, with over 180 shops and restaurants, right next to workplaces, homes, hotels, schools, preschools, health, culture and nature.’\u00a0<\/p>\n

The company claims that building the city out of wood will have many benefits for the ‘environment’ and for ‘people’s health and well-being’.\u00a0<\/p>\n

It says: ‘As shown by various research studies, wooden buildings provide better air quality, reduce stress, increase productivity and store carbon dioxide throughout the time they are in use.\u00a0<\/p>\n

‘Using wood also means quiet construction sites and reduces the number of heavy transports during the construction period.’\u00a0<\/p>\n

Atrium Ljungberg adds that there are currently more than 400 companies already located in Sickla.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Wooden homes are expected to be completed before the offices, with the first residents likely to move in in early 2026.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The company has said that ‘wooden buildings will grow rapidly, adding one new floor every week’.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

Atrium Ljungberg CEO Annica\u00a0\u00c5n\u00e4s has said she hopes the ambitious project will influence the future of urban development.\u00a0<\/p>\n

‘We want to lead the way for the next generation of urban development projects, placing human wellbeing at the centre,’ she said. ‘This requires climate, social and economic sustainability.\u00a0<\/p>\n

And it’s not the only ambitious urban project on the horizon.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Robert de Niro is backing the construction of the UK’s largest skyscraper<\/a> outside London.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The 76-storey Nobu Manchester tower is set to have a 160-bedroom hotel, a restaurant and 452 homes.\u00a0<\/p>\n

And construction has begun on the ‘world’s largest building’<\/a> in Saudi Arabia.\u00a0 \u00a0<\/p>\n
