Alongside his second wife Yoko Ono, he formed the Plastic Ono Band in 1968 and the couple released two editions of experimental tracks called &#8216;Unfinished Music&#8217; in 1968 and 1969 respectively.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The Plastic Ono Band&#8217;s first single was &#8216;Give Peace a Chance&#8217;, written by John in opposition to the Vietnam War. It became the soundtrack of the American anti-war movement in the 1970s and peaked at two on the British charts.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \"><a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/all-about\/john-lennon\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"John&#039;sLink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">John&#8217;s<\/a> follow up to that single was &#8216;Cold Turkey&#8217;. It was written when he and <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/all-about\/yoko-ono\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"YokoLink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Yoko<\/a> decided to withdraw from taking heroin, which John was said to have taken up in 1968, <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/news\/liverpool-news\/fantastic-beatles-song-made-ringo-30718716\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"when relations within The Beatles were strainedLink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">when relations within The Beatles were strained<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">In a 1970 interview, <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/all-about\/john-lennon\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"JohnLink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">John<\/a> explained: &#8220;Heroin. It just was not too much fun. I never injected it or anything. We sniffed a little when we were in real pain.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">&#8220;I mean we just couldn\u2019t \u2013 people were giving us such a hard time. And I\u2019ve had so much s**t thrown at me and especially at Yoko. People like Peter Brown in our office, he comes down and shakes my hand and doesn\u2019t even say hello to her.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">&#8220;Now that\u2019s going on all the time. We took H (heroin) because of what <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/all-about\/the-beatles\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"The BeatlesLink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">The Beatles<\/a> and their pals were doing to us. And we got out of it. They didn\u2019t set down to do it, but things came out of that period. And I don\u2019t forget.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">After John wrote &#8216;Cold Turkey&#8217; <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/news\/liverpool-news\/gallery\/john-lennon-yoko-onos-bed-3195307\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"during his &#039;bed-in&#039; protestLink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">during his &#8216;bed-in&#8217; protest<\/a> with <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/all-about\/yoko-ono\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"YokoLink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Yoko<\/a>, he recorded demos of the song in September 1969 and he presented it to The Beatles who were working on <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/news\/liverpool-news\/epic-beatles-songs-written-paul-30659270\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"&#039;Abbey Road&#039;Link opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">&#8216;Abbey Road&#8217;<\/a> before its release that month. The band turned the song down so John decided to release it under the Plastic Ono Band name in October.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The recording process was far from easy. <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/all-about\/john-lennon\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"JohnLink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">John<\/a> had performed it live on September 13 at Toronto Rock \u2018n\u2019 Roll Revival festival, which was the Plastic Ono&#8217;s Band&#8217;s first stage performance.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">About that performance, John said: &#8220;We were full of junk too. I just threw up for hours till I went on. I nearly threw up in \u2018Cold Turkey\u2019 \u2013 I had a review in Rolling Stone about the film of it \u2013 which I haven\u2019t seen yet, and they\u2019re saying, \u2018I was this and that.\u2019 And I was throwing up nearly in the number, I could hardly sing any of them, I was full of s**t.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The song was recorded at Abbey Road, with <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/all-about\/ringo-starr\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Ringo StarrLink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Ringo Starr<\/a> on drums. They tried 26 takes of the song but couldn&#8217;t get it right, before coming back to the studio on September 28 to get it right.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Upon release on October 20, its references to drugs meant it was banned by some radio stations, which was a point of frustration for <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/all-about\/john-lennon\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"JohnLink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">John<\/a>. He told Playboy in a 1980 interview: &#8220;&#8216;Cold Turkey&#8217; is self-explanatory. It was banned again all over the American radio, so it never got off the ground.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">&#8220;They were thinking I was promoting heroin, but instead\u2026 They\u2019re so stupid about drugs! They\u2019re always arresting smugglers or kids with a few joints in their pocket. They never face the reality.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">&#8220;They\u2019re not looking at the cause of the drug problem. Why is everybody taking drugs? To escape from what? Is life so terrible? Do we live in such a terrible situation that we can\u2019t do anything about it without reinforcement from alcohol or tobacco or sleeping pills? I\u2019m just saying a drug is a drug, you know. Why we take them is important, not who\u2019s selling it to whom on the corner.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">As well as working on this track, <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/all-about\/john-lennon\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"JohnLink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">John<\/a> was said to have told <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/all-about\/the-beatles\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"The BeatlesLink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">The Beatles<\/a> in September 1969 that he wanted a &#8220;divorce&#8221; from the group, seemingly beginning the process of their split. The band released <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/news\/liverpool-news\/cheap-beatles-album-made-paul-30733307\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"&#039;Let It Be&#039; as their final albumLink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">&#8216;Let It Be&#8217; as their final album<\/a> in 1970, as their break-up was made public.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">But &#8216;Cold Turkey&#8217; was a key step in <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/all-about\/john-lennon\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"JohnLink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">John<\/a> moving toward solo work and his artistic endeavours with Yoko.
