{"id":219591,"date":"2025-06-27T21:17:13","date_gmt":"2025-06-27T21:17:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/219591\/"},"modified":"2025-06-27T21:17:13","modified_gmt":"2025-06-27T21:17:13","slug":"british-holidaymakers-in-spain-face-summer-of-strikes-by-hospitality-staff-news-world","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/219591\/","title":{"rendered":"British holidaymakers in Spain face summer of strikes by hospitality staff | News World"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\t\t<img fetchpriority=\"high\" width=\"646\" height=\"363\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/SEC_257094362-d26e.jpg\" class=\"article-image wp-image-23525150\" alt=\"\" decoding=\"sync\"\/><br \/>\n\t\tProtesters campaigning for a \u2018another tourism model\u2019 and \u2018the right to a dignified life\u2019 in Majorca (Picture: AFP)<\/p>\n<p>British holidaymakers may find their getaways thrown into chaos amid a <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/summer\/\" data-track=\"inline-tag-auto-link_article\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">summer<\/a> of planned <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/strikes\/\" data-track=\"inline-tag-auto-link_article\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">strike<\/a> action at popular <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/spain\/\" data-track=\"inline-tag-auto-link_article\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Spanish<\/a> destinations.<\/p>\n<p>Hospitality sector workers in the Balearic Islands have threatened to walk out from July 10 after talks broke down over pay increases.<\/p>\n<p>A total of 180,000 workers in hotels, restaurants and other tourist spots \u2013 a majority of those employed in the sector on the islands \u2013 are set to strike.<\/p>\n<p>It comes amid a wave of other industrial action as well as protests against over-tourism across Spain.<\/p>\n<p>The main flash point in negotiations with unions is a 17 per cent pay rise demanded by unions. So far workers have been offered a salary bump of 8.5 per cent.<\/p>\n<p>The latest announcement of strike action comes despite an eleventh-hour deal reached with hotel workers to avoid a walkout in four of the Canary Islands including Tenerife.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t<img width=\"646\" height=\"485\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/SEI_255674980-6dbf.jpg\" class=\"article-image wp-image-23518365\" alt=\"Majorca anti-tourism protest Laurence Dollimore Protesters were heard chanting slogans against Airbnb and ?guiris? - the Spanish slang term used to describe Brits and other foreigners. and house prices passes by in Palma de Mallorca (Picture: AFP)<\/p>\n<p>Further strikes in Majorca, Ibiza and Formentera will affect all bars, restaurants, cafes and night spots may go ahead on July 18, 19, 25 and 31.<\/p>\n<p>The UGT union is also demanding several other reforms to working practices, including a 35-hour working week and to increase the duration of seasonal fixed-term contracts from six to nine months a year.<\/p>\n<p>UGT spokesperson Jose Garcia Relucio branded concessions made at Thursday\u2019s talks as \u2018more crumbs\u2019, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-14851627\/British-holidaymakers-hit-Spains-summer-strikes-Anti-tourism-activists-double-say-walk-coming-weeks-cause-CHAOS-visitors.html\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-14851627\/British-holidaymakers-hit-Spains-summer-strikes-Anti-tourism-activists-double-say-walk-coming-weeks-cause-CHAOS-visitors.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">MailOnline<\/a> reported.<\/p>\n<p>The union said that despite entering the negotiations to improve conditions for workers, the meeting had ended with several agreed reforms rolled back.<\/p>\n<p>However the Majorca Hotel Business Federation blamed UGT for a creating a poor negotiating environment and failing to listen to its reasons for not meeting its demands.<\/p>\n<p>Its vice-president, Mar\u00eda Jos\u00e9 Aguil\u00f3, said: \u2018We have reached a point where, despite the fact we have been willing to address the issue of guaranteed employment for fixed-term contracts, they have not listened to our reasons for not raising the proposed [salary] increase.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Holidaymakers have already been disrupted this week after EasyJet cabin crew in Spain went on strike from Wednesday, impacting dozens of flights to popular destinations including Malaga, Barcelona and Alicante.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t<img width=\"646\" height=\"431\" Images)<\/p>\n<p>A total of 62 flights were cancelled with the airline to and from Spain on Thursday, the second day of action.<\/p>\n<p>The USO union has not ruled out a further indefinite strike if its demands its members to be paid equal to EasyJet employees in other countries are not met.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this month, thousands marched across Spain to tell Brits to \u2018go home\u2019 amid concerns over unsustainable tourism at favourite holiday spots.<\/p>\n<p>A demonstration in Palma de Majorca saw protesters carry placards in front of beleaguered tourists reading: \u2018Mallorca is
