We\u2019ve got <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timeout.com\/london\/food-drink\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fantastic food,<\/a> incredible\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.timeout.com\/london\/theatre\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">culture<\/a>\u00a0and hundreds of buildings that house centuries and centuries of fascinating history. So, it\u2019s not surprising that England\u2019s most visited attraction in 2024, as revealed by VisitEngland,\u00a0can be found here in the capital.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>The British Museum<\/strong> saw 6.5 million visitors in 2024, making it the most popular free attraction in all of England and the most visited attraction in the country overall.\u00a0That\u00a0figure\u00a0is up 11 percent compared 2023.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>RECOMMENDED<br \/><\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.timeout.com\/london\/attractions\/top-london-museums\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The best museums in London<br \/><\/a><\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.timeout.com\/london\/things-to-do\/14-weird-but-wonderful-london-museums\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The 20 weirdest museums in London<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re not one of those millions and millions of people who have already seen the British Museum for themselves, check out our guide to it <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timeout.com\/london\/museums\/british-museum\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>. If you\u2019ve not got long, Time Out\u2019s contributing writer Alex Sims advises that\u00a0\u2018a\u00a0great way to see all the big hitters and get a feel for the place is by picking up one of the great museum maps that give you timed routes around the labyrinthine institution. The hour-long route is a great whistle-stop tour around the museum\u2019s best-known objects.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Looking forward, the museum has big plans to build on\u00a0its immense popularity last year. Its\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.timeout.com\/london\/news\/the-british-museums-western-range-galleries-are-getting-a-spectacular-makeover-022525\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Western Galleries are getting a huge makeover<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0it will apparently start undergoing the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.timeout.com\/london\/news\/the-british-museum-is-getting-the-biggest-transformation-of-any-museum-in-the-world-092224\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u2018biggest transformation of any museum in the world\u2019<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Nine out of England\u2019s top ten most visited free attractions for 2024 belong to London. The\u00a0<strong>Natural History Museum<\/strong> came in second place with a total of 5.9m visitors (you can find everything you need to know about that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timeout.com\/london\/museums\/natural-history-museum\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>) and the <strong>Tate Modern <\/strong>earned third place with 4.6 mill, which was down three percent compared to the year before (we\u2019ve got an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timeout.com\/london\/art\/tate-modern\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">in depth guide<\/a> to that, too).<\/p>\n<p>As for the English attractions that charge an entry fee, London landmarks still came out on top. The Tower of London was the most visited paid-for attraction in 2024 with 2.9m people checking it out and Kew Gardens was the runner-up with 2.3m (an impressive 15 percent increase on its 2023 headcount).\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Overall, VisitEngland discovered that attractions across England enjoyed a 1.4 percent increase in footfall from 2023 to 2024.
