{"id":219872,"date":"2025-06-27T23:45:12","date_gmt":"2025-06-27T23:45:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/219872\/"},"modified":"2025-06-27T23:45:12","modified_gmt":"2025-06-27T23:45:12","slug":"zombie-fungus-caught-bursting-from-host-bodies-99-million-years-ago-sciencealert","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/219872\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;Zombie&#8217; Fungus Caught Bursting From Host Bodies 99 Million Years Ago : ScienceAlert"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Scientists have caught ancient parasitic fungi in the act of bursting from insect hosts, in dramatic scenes frozen in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Amber\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">amber<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Dating back almost 100 million years, these two specimens are among the oldest evidence of &#8216;zombie&#8217; fungus, second only to one early-Cretaceous species discovered <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1016\/j.ympev.2008.08.028\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">back in 2008<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Amber forms over millions of years from the sticky resin of trees, and is renowned for the many <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/venus-flytrap-wasp-99-million-year-old-amber-reveals-bizarre-new-species\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">bizarre<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/cretaceous-sea-creatures-have-been-found-trapped-in-amber-alongside-insects\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">unique<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/ancient-pine-cone-trapped-in-amber-shows-a-super-rare-form-of-plant-parenting\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">enlightening<\/a> moments it has preserved.<\/p>\n<p>These two pieces, now in the hands of the London Natural History Museum, include the new fungus species Paleoophiocordyceps gerontoformicae, with its tiny spore stalks sprouting from the body of a pupating ant, and P. ironomyiae, in the form of a singular, phallic fruiting body protruding from a fly&#8217;s head.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Related: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/hotter-climate-could-fuel-spread-of-dangerous-fungi-scientists-warn?utm_source=SA_article&amp;utm_campaign=related_link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hotter Climate Could Fuel Spread of Dangerous Fungi, Scientists Warn<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/P.-gerontoformicae-body-pic.jpg\" alt=\"two pictures side by side, one of the ant larvae in amber, one of a scanning electron microscope picture of part of the ant's body that has little sphere shaped things on stalks sticking out\" width=\"642\" height=\"300\" class=\"size-full wp-image-165911\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>P. gerontoformicae growing on an ant pupa, trapped in amber. B, 2025)<\/p>\n<p>These newfound species appear to share traits with living relatives, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ophiocordyceps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ophiocordyceps<\/a>, that continue to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/the-last-of-us-could-fungi-really-cause-a-zombie-apocalypse\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">infect insects<\/a> as a means of spreading their spores.<\/p>\n<p>Scientists think the Paleoophiocordyceps species may have separated from Ophiocordyceps around 130 million years ago.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/P.-ironomyiae-specimen.png\" alt=\"photo of a fly in amber with a dark baton-shaped structure protruding from its head\" width=\"1000\" height=\"424\" class=\"size-full wp-image-165913\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>P. ironomyiae and its fly host in amber.
