{"id":219968,"date":"2025-06-28T00:37:12","date_gmt":"2025-06-28T00:37:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/219968\/"},"modified":"2025-06-28T00:37:12","modified_gmt":"2025-06-28T00:37:12","slug":"australias-tga-issues-interim-report-to-remove-supplements-high-in-b6-from-shelves-as-toxicity-cases-rise","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/219968\/","title":{"rendered":"Australia&#8217;s TGA issues interim report to remove supplements high in B6 from shelves as toxicity cases rise"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Major changes have been proposed to restrict access to a common over-the-counter vitamin linked to a growing number of poisoning cases.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Vitamin B6 \u2014 often listed as pyridoxine, pyridoxal, or pyridoxamine \u2014 is present in thousands of products in Australia as an additive, including medicines, multivitamin and mineral supplements, energy drinks and weight loss shakes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">174 reports of peripheral neuropathy, peripheral sensory neuropathy, small fibre neuropathy or chronic polyneuropathy for products containing B6 have been reported to the medicines regulator, the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA), <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-01-08\/vitamin-b6-toxicity-peripheral-neuropathy-health-supplements\/104793006\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/104793006\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">though medical practitioners predict the true number is significantly higher.<\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"EmphasisedText_quote__TE6kn\"><p>&#8220;There are likely hundreds of thousands of Australians who are taking far too much vitamin B6,&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>  Michael Bonning from the Australian Medical Association said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;While most of them have no side effects, if you are taking large doses of B6 your risk of peripheral neuropathy goes up.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;We know that reported cases of peripheral neuropathy are a massive underestimate of the problem in the community, because so many people are unaware that that vitamins can cause these symptoms.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Man in a suit sitting in a patient room. \" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/5ece2edce81382df67109c467abcdc60\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Dr Michael Bonning says most people get all the vitamins they need from their daily diet. \u00a0 (ABC News: Rahni Sadler)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">In a new development to improve public safety, several recommendations have been handed down in a report penned by a senior TGA medical officer known as &#8220;the delegate&#8221;.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Called the &#8216;Interim Decision&#8217;, the report acts on the advice of the government&#8217;s Advisory Committee on Medicines Scheduling.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Most notably, it calls for the TGA to reclassify supplements containing more than 50mg of B6 as Schedule 3 (Pharmacist Only), by February 2027.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The move would affect around 100 products, requiring pharmacists to first speak with consumers before approving a purchase.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Currently, preparations providing up to 200 mg of [B6] &#8230; are available for self-selection without any professional guidance or oversight,&#8221; the report states, adding &#8220;almost 80 per cent of these products provide a dose of more than 2 mg\/day, which is above the RDI for pyridoxine, pyridoxal or pyridoxamine.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;The daily requirement of vitamin B6 can be easily obtained from the usual Australian diet, and the use of supplemental vitamin B6 provides limited benefit except in people who have a clinically diagnosed vitamin B6 deficiency.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">A TGA spokesperson told 7.30 the decision, if implemented, &#8220;will reduce the maximum amount of vitamin B6 allowed in oral products than currently available for general sale&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Shelves containing bottles of supplements.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/12b08b1edb76a59e168d36baa1bc23aa\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Supplements take up major space in pharmacies. (ABC News: Jerry Rickard)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Use of ingredient names in labelling is inconsistent and confusing for consumers \u2026 and not always described as vitamin B6,&#8221; the report said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Of concern is that there are several products on the market where the front of the label provides no indication that vitamin B6 is an ingredient.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">It suggested changing the language on warning labels to be more direct.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Excess consumption of vitamin B6 can cause nerve damage. Stop use and see a doctor if you experience tingling, burning or numbness,&#8221; was a suggestion.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The report also calls on the multi-billion-dollar complementary medicines sector to take greater responsibility for educating consumers and reducing the risk of vitamin B6 overexposure, noting current labelling places too much burden on consumers to calculate total B6 intake.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Estimating the total daily vitamin B6 intake \u2026 is likely to be beyond the health literacy capability of the typical consumer,&#8221; it said.<\/p>\n<p>Loading&#8230;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The CEO of Complementary Medicines Australia John O&#8217;Doherty told 7.30: &#8220;we&#8217;ll be carefully reviewing the interim decision and the recommendations of the Advisory Committee on Medicines Scheduling.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Mr O&#8217;Doherty argued adverse events relating to the use of vitamin B6 are &#8220;extremely rare&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Based on a comparison of sales data with the TGA&#8217;s public Database of Adverse Events, the chance of a reaction is less than one in half a million \u2014 this is extremely rare,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\"><a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-01-28\/vitamin-b6-toxicity-cases-rise-vitamins-supplements-tga-review\/104863232\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/104863232\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">However, previous 7.30 investigations have found dozens of Australians have had issues from B6 toxicity,<\/a> with many only becoming aware of their illness after seeing our reports.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The TGA delegate also warns the prevalence could be much higher.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Hands holding a jar of pills.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/9abe3a4b7bee2bb2feeb02676fb294bf\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Supplements with high levels of B6 in them have caused cases of B6 toxicity. (ABC News: Tom Hartley)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;The true rate of occurrence of an adverse event cannot be determined from spontaneous adverse event reporting systems due to both general under-reporting and a lack of usage data,&#8221; its report read.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;A low number of spontaneous adverse event reports cannot be considered evidence of the absence a safety issue.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Mr O&#8217;Doherty however agreed with some of the labelling recommendations, telling 7.30 his organisation has &#8220;been calling on the TGA to implement changes that allow labels and advertising to use terminology and ingredient names that consumers better understand.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;At CMA&#8217;s request, this is now under internal review at the TGA&#8221;, he said.<\/p>\n<p>Class action investigation progressing<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Medical negligence lawyer Nick Mann said the interim decision is a &#8220;small step in the right direction&#8221; but argued the TGA &#8220;can and should&#8221; go further.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A man in a suit.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/1293f2259ad326a85e54ce9493fd1cb6\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Nick Mann says his law firm has launched a class action against Blackmores.
