Two brutalist Edinburgh tower blocks, recently recognised for their architectural significance by Historic Environment Scotland, are to be refurbished in a \u00a369m retrofit initiative.<\/p>\n

The City of Edinburgh Council will upgrade the A-listed Cables Wynd House and Linksview House<\/a> by improving energy efficiency and fire safety to modern standards while safeguarding the long-term future of the 1960s blocks.<\/p>\n

Collective Architecture has prepared detailed plans to upgrade the physical fabric and mechanical systems in both blocks, which together house 310 homes for social rent.<\/p>\n

These interventions include replacement windows, improved insulation and upgraded heating systems to improve the comfort of residents as well as the introduction of sprinklers, ventilation and installation of a fire-fighting lift to improve safety. Placemaking enhancements are also planned including the installation of external lighting, improved access controls and landscaping.<\/p>\n

Carl Baker, architect and Passivhaus certified designer at Collective Architecture, said: \u201cOur proposals place residents at the heart of the process, aiming to provide greener, warmer homes, while celebrating and sensitively enhancing the unique character of the Category A listed buildings.<\/p>\n

“As part of a just transition, our carefully considered interventions will improve the thermal and environmental performance of the iconic structures – boosting energy efficiency and alleviating the risk of fuel poverty.”<\/p>\n

Residents are being kept front and centre of the overhaul with an engagement process running concurrent with the build programme.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n
