The prime minister of Albania<\/a> has claimed the UK<\/a> is in \u201ca very dark place\u201d after Brexit<\/a>. Edi Rama\u2019s bold comments came as he took aim at UK plans to send refused asylum seekers to \u201creturn hubs\u201d in third countries.<\/p>\n

The leader of Albania\u2019s Socialist Party accused Britain of looking for places to \u201cdump immigrants\u201d and suggested the asylum policy would not have been \u201cimaginable\u201d before Brexit<\/a>. Sir Keir Starmer<\/a> announced the Government would begin exploring the possibility of sending failed asylum seekers for processing in third countries prior to deportation during a visit to Albania last month<\/a>. Mr Rama said: \u201cIt\u2019s one of those things that 10 years ago would simply not have not been imaginable\u2026that Britain would look for places to dump immigrants.\u201d<\/p>\n

He made the comments in an interview with The Guardian<\/a>, adding: \u201cThe fact that today it\u2019s not just imaginable, it\u2019s happening, is not because of Keir Starmer<\/a> or [Rishi] Sunak doing something outrageous; it\u2019s because of the country being in a very dark place.<\/p>\n

\u201c80% of the things that are said, or are written, or are accepted as a normal part of the discourse in today\u2019s Britain are things that [before Brexit<\/a>] would have been totally unacceptable, totally ridiculous, totally shameful.\u201d<\/p>\n

In May, Mr Rama appeared to rule out being a host to the UK scheme, saying Albania was \u201cloyal\u201d to its arrangement with Italy.<\/p>\n

He told The Guardian<\/a> that \u201cvery decent\u201d Sir Keir had not made a public request for Albania to take part and said former PMs Boris Johnson<\/a> and Rishi Sunak<\/a> had previously asked.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve always said no,\u201d said Mr Rama who has just led his party to a landmark fourth term in office.<\/p>\n

He argued Albania\u2019s similar deal with Italy<\/a>, which has been held up by legal objections, is different because the countries have a \u201cvery special relationship\u201d.<\/p>\n

Sir Keir said last month that he has spoken to countries about possibly holding return hubs<\/a>.<\/p>\n

It comes as the Government continues to struggle to get ahold of the migrant crisis<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The Prime Minister has vowed to \u201csmash the gangs\u201d responsible for smuggling people across the Channel but crossings are at a record high for this point in the year (18,51).<\/p>\n

The UK and France<\/a> are expected to announce a one in, one out migrant returns deal to crack down on the crossings<\/a>, according to reports.<\/p>\n
