LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) \u2013 One horse won the Kentucky Derby. Another won the Breeders\u2019 Cup Classic. A third took the Dubai World Cup. Saturday\u2019s Stephen Foster Stakes at Churchill Downs won\u2019t crown a champion \u2014 but it may feel like one already showed up.<\/p>\n
The 44th running of the $1 million Grade I Stephen Foster is being hailed as the richest field in the race\u2019s history. Seven older horses with more than\u00a0$26 million in combined earnings\u00a0are entered, headlined by\u00a0Kentucky Derby 150 winner Mystik Dan<\/strong>,\u00a0Breeders\u2019 Cup Classic winner and 3-year-old Horse of the Year Sierra Leone<\/strong>, and\u00a0Dubai star Hit Show<\/strong>. Of the seven entries, six are millionaires.<\/p>\n The field boasts five grade one wins, 40 career wins (led by 6-year-old Skippylongstocking<\/strong>) and eight combined win at Churchill Downs \u2013 three of them by Mystik Dan.<\/p>\n The 1 1\/8-mile race is also a\u00a0\u201cWin and You\u2019re In\u201d qualifier\u00a0for the $7 million Breeders\u2019 Cup Classic in November at Del Mar.\u00a0<\/p>\n Among the heavy hitters:<\/p>\n The field also includes\u00a0Mindframe (7-2)<\/strong>, a Grade I winner at Churchill;\u00a0First Mission (4-1)<\/strong>, a four-time graded stakes winner coming off a win in the Oaklawn Handicap, and\u00a0Ashcroft (30-1)<\/strong>, out of the D. Wayne Lukas barn and now trained by Bas Nicholl.<\/p>\n The Foster headlines a\u00a012-race card\u00a0with\u00a0six total stakes, including:<\/p>\n Also scheduled —\u00a0presentations of the engraved trophies for this year\u2019s Derby and Oaks winners<\/strong>. Representatives for\u00a0Sovereignty<\/strong>\u00a0(trainer Bill Mott, jockey Junior Alvarado and a representative from Godolphin racing) will be honored after Race 9 (approximately 4:58 p.m.).
