{"id":221295,"date":"2025-06-28T12:19:11","date_gmt":"2025-06-28T12:19:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/221295\/"},"modified":"2025-06-28T12:19:11","modified_gmt":"2025-06-28T12:19:11","slug":"ukraine-to-receive-46-million-for-repairs-to-chornobyl-sarcophagus-after-russian-strike","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/221295\/","title":{"rendered":"Ukraine to receive $46 million for repairs to Chornobyl sarcophagus after Russian strike"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Ukraine will receive \u20ac42.5 million ($45.7 million) from international partners to repair the protective arch over the Chornobyl nuclear plant&#8217;s destroyed reactor, Environment and Natural Resources Minister Svitlana Hrynchuk announced on June 26.<\/p>\n<p>A Russian Shahed-type drone <a href=\"https:\/\/kyivindependent.com\/chornobyl-nuclear-plant-shelter-damaged-in-russian-drone-strike\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">struck<\/a> the New Safe Confinement over Chornobyl&#8217;s destroyed 4th reactor on February 14. <\/p>\n<p>The structure built to contain radioactive material was damaged, no serious radiation leaks were caused.<\/p>\n<p>France pledged \u20ac10.6 million ($11.4 million), the United Kingdom committed \u20ac6.9 million ($7.4 million), and the European Commission contributed \u20ac25 million ($26.9 million) toward the repairs.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This is further evidence that Ukraine does not face its challenges alone, but has reliable friends,&#8221; Hrynchuk <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/s.grynchuk\/posts\/30107034418912278?rdid=guxjrprczjUEaODa#\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wrote on Facebook<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The funding was announced at the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) headquarters in London during a meeting of the Chornobyl International Cooperation Account Assembly of Contributors \u2013 the governing body of the fund created to address Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant issues.<\/p>\n<p>Ukraine has already surveyed the building&#8217;s structure and completed preparatory work, Hrynchuk said. In March, \u20ac400,000 ($430,000) was allocated from the special fund for this purpose.<\/p>\n<p>The assembly discussed plans for temporary repairs and further work to fully restore the arch&#8217;s integrity and functionality.<\/p>\n<p>Chornobyl was the site of the world&#8217;s worst <a href=\"https:\/\/kyivindependent.com\/chornobyl-nuclear-disaster\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">nuclear disaster<\/a> in 1986, contaminating areas across Ukraine, <a href=\"https:\/\/kyivindependent.com\/tag\/belarus\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Belarus<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/kyivindependent.com\/tag\/russia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Russia<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>After an protective structure was built over the destroyed reactor to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=3azuigLn1Bc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">contain radioactive material<\/a> in the months following the disaster, the current arch, an international project built as a more permanent solution, was completed in 2017.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"kg-bookmark-container\" href=\"https:\/\/kyivindependent.com\/chornobyl-isnt-safe-anymore-again\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><\/p>\n<p>Chornobyl isn\u2019t safe anymore&#8230; again<\/p>\n<p>Chornobyl disaster occurred in the early hours of April 26, 1986, in Soviet Ukraine.
