D\u00edaz\u2019s colleague, Culture Minister Ernest Urtasun, who also joined the march in Budapest, said Spain\u2019s government is \u201cvery, very concerned\u201d about the issue. \u201cIt is a duty\u201d of all progressive governments to \u201cstand in the way\u201d when there are attacks against fundamental rights, he added.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Echoing D\u00edaz, Uratsun said the government in Madrid expects \u201cthe European Commission to be strong in defending EU law.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cWe would like the European Commission to be much stronger than it has been doing in the last months,\u201d Uratsun said.<\/p>\n
The Spanish delegation was joined in Budapest by government representatives from France and the Netherlands, as well as lawmakers from dozens of other countries and mayors from major European capitals.\u00a0<\/p>\n
During a press conference Saturday morning, the chairs of the European Parliament Socialist, Left, Green and liberal groups also urged the Commission to launch a challenge on the law.<\/p>\n
\u201cWords are not enough,\u201d said Socialists and Democrats group leader Iratxe Garc\u00eda P\u00e9rez. \u201cWe need action. And action means that the European Commission start the infringement procedure against this law,\u201d Garc\u00eda P\u00e9rez said.<\/p>\n
Civil society organizations are also calling on the European Commission<\/a> to intervene against Hungary\u2019s potential use of\u00a0facial recognition technology to identify attendees in the Pride parade.
