{"id":221836,"date":"2025-06-28T17:08:16","date_gmt":"2025-06-28T17:08:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/221836\/"},"modified":"2025-06-28T17:08:16","modified_gmt":"2025-06-28T17:08:16","slug":"labour-rule-in-wales-taken-for-granted-and-under-threat-at-senedd-poll-morgan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/221836\/","title":{"rendered":"Labour rule in Wales taken for granted and under threat at Senedd poll \u2013 Morgan"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>People take for granted that Labour will always be in power in Wales, the First Minister has said, as she warned that Reform UK are the \u201cbiggest threat\u201d to the nation\u2019s way of life ahead of key elections next year.<\/p>\n<p>Baroness Eluned Morgan warned in her speech to the Welsh Labour conference that the Senedd elections will be a \u201cmoment of reckoning\u201d as Nigel Farage\u2019s party are \u201crising\u201d, prompting people to ask \u201cbig, serious questions about what kind of future they want for Wales\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Reform is looking to end Labour\u2019s 26 years of domination at the Senedd elections in May next year.<\/p>\n<p>Labour performed poorly in this year\u2019s local elections in England, which saw Mr Farage\u2019s party win a swathe of council seats.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think they\u2019re the biggest threat to Wales and our way of life,\u201d Baroness Morgan told the PA news agency.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think people take Labour for granted in Wales. It\u2019s something that, you know, there\u2019s an expectation that we\u2019ll always be in power.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/2.80576204.jpg\" alt=\"Nigel Farage during a press conference\" data-title=\"Nigel Farage press conference\" data-copyright-holder=\"PA Wire\" data-copyright-notice=\"PA Wire\/PA Images\" data-credit=\"Ben Birchall\" data-usage-terms=\"\"  \/>Reform UK leader Nigel Farage spoke at a press conference in Port Talbot earlier this month (PA)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo the things that are real in people\u2019s lives today, like free prescriptions, free parking in hospitals, free school meals for children in school. All of these things are political choices, and Reform would make different political choices.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Asked if she felt the best way to counter the threat of Reform in the elections was to shift to the left, she said: \u201cWhat I\u2019m clear is that we\u2019ve got to stay true to the values of Welsh Labour.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd the values of Welsh Labour are consistent with the red Welsh way \u2026 and there are times when we will be in a different place from the UK.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd yes, I think the political centre of gravity in Wales is further to the left than throughout the UK.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/2.79086563.jpg\" alt=\"Tata Steel\u2019s Port Talbot steelworks in south Wales \" data-title=\"Tata Steel\u2019s Port Talbot plans\" data-copyright-holder=\"PA Wire\" data-copyright-notice=\"PA Wire\/PA Images\" data-credit=\"Ben Birchall\" data-usage-terms=\"FILE PHOTO\"  \/>Port Talbot\u2019s remaining blast furnaces were shut down in September (PA)<\/p>\n<p>She had earlier accused Mr Farage of \u201cpeddling fantasies about sending people\u2019s grandchildren down coal mines and reopening blast furnaces\u201d while the Welsh government deals with the \u201ccost of industrial decline\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Farage has said his party wants to restart Port Talbot\u2019s blast furnaces, which were shut down in September, with a new electric arc furnace being built in their place.<\/p>\n<p>The Prime Minister warned in his own speech that Mr Farage \u201cisn\u2019t interested in Wales\u201d and has no viable plan for Port Talbot\u2019s blast furnaces.<\/p>\n<p>Sir Keir Starmer said the Reform leader has \u201cno idea what he\u2019s talking about\u201d when it comes to the furnaces, and has \u201cno plan at all\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/2.80823772.jpg\" alt=\"Welsh Labour conference\" data-title=\"Welsh Labour conference\" data-copyright-holder=\"PA Media\" data-copyright-notice=\"PA Media\" data-credit=\"Welsh Labour TV\" data-usage-terms=\"PICTURE DESK USE ONLY.
