{"id":222128,"date":"2025-06-28T19:46:11","date_gmt":"2025-06-28T19:46:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/222128\/"},"modified":"2025-06-28T19:46:11","modified_gmt":"2025-06-28T19:46:11","slug":"bakeries-are-the-new-pubs-in-london","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/222128\/","title":{"rendered":"Bakeries Are the New Pubs in London"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tLondoners are swapping their pints of lager for sweet treats in a city that\u2019s gone sober \u2014 or at least partly so.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe aftermath of COVID-19, the exodus of European workers post-Brexit and a new generation that\u2019s shunning binge-drinking in favor of alcohol-free beer, chai and early-morning running clubs have all transformed the city, which used to party through the night.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tNow people are getting high on the smell of cinnamon, vanilla, chocolate and brewing coffee, and piling into independent bakeries, which star personalities are opening across the city.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tKing Charles\u2019 goddaughter <a data-id=\"1235359267\" data-type=\"post\" href=\"https:\/\/wwd.com\/footwear-news\/shoe-industry-news\/india-hicks-edwina-mountbatten-penelope-chilvers-kate-middleton-1235359267\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">India Hicks<\/a>, an interior designer and former Ralph Lauren model, is just one of many pushing a sugar high.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tShe\u2019s helped two brothers, Can and Cengizhan Ayan, who hail from a family of fourth-generation Turkish chocolatiers, set up Naya, a luxury patisserie on North Audley Street in Mayfair.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"c-lazy-image__img lrv-u-background-color-grey-lightest lrv-u-width-100p lrv-u-display-block lrv-u-height-auto\" src=\"https:\/\/wwd.com\/wp-content\/themes\/vip\/pmc-wwd-2021\/assets\/public\/lazyload-fallback.gif\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/Naya.jpg\" alt=\"Naya in Mayfair.\" data-lazy- data-lazy- height=\"1024\" width=\"819\" decoding=\"async\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\tNaya in Mayfair.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tCourtesy<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cI\u2019m not a qualified person to take on the creation of a bakery, but I do know an awful lot about brand building,\u201d says Hicks in an interview from her home in the Bahamas.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tShe says her expertise lies in creating an atmosphere \u2014 and drawing in a crowd. Naya\u2019s interiors feature hand-painted de Gournay wallpaper as well as green velvet booths, cream chairs and leopard-print cushions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe brothers have brought over recipes from their family bakery in Turkey and downsized each pastry, from chocolate \u00e9clairs to cream buns, into bite-size portions. Along with Champagne and iced pistachio lattes, there is also a range of detox teas.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tHealth is a subject that\u2019s top of mind at Naya. \u201cWe know people are more health-conscious and we had a conversation about perhaps having a keto afternoon tea,\u201d says Cengizhan, referring to the ketogenic diet, which is high in fat and protein and low in carbs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tHe added that they\u2019re working on updating the menu and introducing salads and more savory options, although there are no plans to enter restaurant territory.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tA short ride away from Naya, on Fulham Road in Chelsea, is the new bakery called Reemies, which is hard to miss with its bright fuchsia pink and red exterior.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"c-lazy-image__img lrv-u-background-color-grey-lightest lrv-u-width-100p lrv-u-display-block lrv-u-height-auto\" src=\"https:\/\/wwd.com\/wp-content\/themes\/vip\/pmc-wwd-2021\/assets\/public\/lazyload-fallback.gif\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/Reemies-store.jpg\" alt=\"preemies \" data-lazy- data-lazy- height=\"1024\" width=\"819\" decoding=\"async\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\tReemies in Chelsea.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tCourtesy<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tIts founder, Reem Abu Samra, is a lawyer-turned-full-time baker. She opened the shop last April after her cake delivery business started to boom. Her nonfussy cakes are now on the shelves at Harrods, Panzer\u2019s Delicatessen in St. John\u2019s Wood and Bailey &amp; Sage in Battersea and Hampstead.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cI always loved very homely cakes, and I felt like I couldn\u2019t really buy any without it being overly processed,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tShe\u2019s been baking banana bread since she was 14 years old and it continues to win her fans. She started making the bread for friends who own the coffee shop Noxy Brothers, in <a href=\"https:\/\/wwd.com\/tag\/london\/\" id=\"auto-tag_london\" data-tag=\"london\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">London<\/a>\u2018s Burlington Arcade, and the orders quickly multiplied.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tFans of Reemies include <a href=\"https:\/\/wwd.com\/beauty-industry-news\/beauty-features\/idris-and-sabrina-elba-launch-sable-labs-skin-care-1235238433\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"1235238433\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Idris Elba<\/a>, the Ecclestone family, Viscount Linley and the Emirate of Dubai royal family.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tAbu Samra sees her cakes as everyday treats rather than one-off luxuries. She adds that a majority of the customers who stop by the shop have just come out of a Pilates class.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tLuxury brands, too, are progressively tapping into catering for an audience that\u2019s closer to becoming teetotal than any other generation. The two have come together to collaborate on a series of deliciously sweet images using small colorful cakes and the designer\u2019s Fruit Salad collection, which was inspired by a pair of glass fruit clip-one earrings that belonged to her grandmother in New Zealand.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cI\u2019m in his patisserie daily for my morning coffee.
