{"id":222524,"date":"2025-06-28T23:25:11","date_gmt":"2025-06-28T23:25:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/222524\/"},"modified":"2025-06-28T23:25:11","modified_gmt":"2025-06-28T23:25:11","slug":"george-russell-reprimanded-for-unsafe-release-during-f1-austrian-gp-qualifying","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/222524\/","title":{"rendered":"George Russell reprimanded for unsafe release during F1 Austrian GP qualifying"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsport.com\/driver\/george-russell\/21167\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">George Russell<\/a> was reprimanded by the stewards for \u201centering the fast lane without a suitable gap\u201d during qualifying for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsport.com\/location\/red-bull-ring\/366\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Formula 1 Austrian Grand Prix<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsport.com\/team\/mercedes\/5\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mercedes<\/a> driver was issued a warning after speaking to the stewards about the incident, which took place at the beginning of Q3 in the pitlane.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>According to the FIA, Russell \u201ctried to enter the fast lane when other cars were approaching\u201d and had to stop at an angle that prevented him from seeing the other cars heading out on track.<\/p>\n<p>In an attempt to radio the team, Russell accidentally slipped the clutch, causing the car to jump forward.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Mercedes admitted it \u201ccould have done a better job managing the situation\u201d and the Brit was handed a reprimand.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI saw a few drivers pulling out, but then you have a massive blind spot,\u201d said Russell. \u201cYou can&#8217;t get out of a window. You can look through but you can only move your head so much. It&#8217;s a massive blind spot.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>   <img decoding=\"async\" draggable=\"false\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/1751153111_296_george-russell-mercedes.jpg\" alt=\"George Russell, Mercedes\" width=\"1200\" height=\"800\" loading=\"lazy\"\/> <\/p>\n<p class=\"title\">George Russell, Mercedes<\/p>\n<p class=\"photographer\">Photo by: Peter Fox \/ Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>He will start Sunday\u2019s grand prix in fifth, while his rookie team-mate <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsport.com\/driver\/andrea-kimi-antonelli\/953412\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Andrea Kimi Antonelli<\/a> will start in ninth.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat was definitely the maximum we could have got,\u201d added Russell. \u201cI think the gap to everyone except Lando [Norris, polesitter] is quite understandable, but Lando obviously did a really amazing job all day today, and that was probably bigger than we thought.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut we know our strengths and our weaknesses, and this was never going to be a strong race for us.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It comes after a dominant Canadian Grand Prix for the Silver Arrows last time out, as Russell claimed his first win of the season while Antonelli took his maiden F1 podium with third.<\/p>\n<p>The result was protested by Red Bull, with the team lodging two complaints relating to Russell\u2019s behaviour behind a late safety car.
