class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailyrecord.co.uk\/all-about\/nuclear-weapons\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">nuclear<\/a> sites, the world\u2019s most powerful nations have now turned their attention to their own defence.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced the UK would buy 12 new F-35A fighter jets capable of transporting <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailyrecord.co.uk\/all-about\/nuclear-weapons\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">nuclear<\/a> bombs while at the NATO summit in the Netherlands Donald Trump praised members for agreeing to spend five per cent of their GDP on defence.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">A newly-published National Security Strategy stated the UK has to \u201cactively prepare for the possibility of the UK coming under direct threat, potentially in a <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailyrecord.co.uk\/news\/politics\/keir-starmers-defence-expansion-plan-35354772\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">wartime<\/a> scenario\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Politicians from across the spectrum have been debating what this preparation looks like and whether it should include <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailyrecord.co.uk\/all-about\/nuclear-weapons\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">nuclear<\/a> weapons.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Here the Sunday Mail speaks to <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailyrecord.co.uk\/all-about\/labour-party\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Labour\u2019s<\/a> Scottish Secretary Ian Murray and the SNP\u2019s defence spokesman Dave Doogan about their very different views on how to protect the nation from foreign threats.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" Murray<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Scottish Secretary Ian Murray has called for the SNP to rethink its stance against nuclear <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailyrecord.co.uk\/news\/politics\/keir-starmers-defence-expansion-plan-35354772\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">weapons<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailyrecord.co.uk\/all-about\/labour-party\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Labour<\/a> MP for Edinburgh South changed his stance on nukes in recent months, having been a \u201clifelong\u201d opponent of the weapons previously.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">In February he was praised by disarmament campaigners for his support of the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons, but a month later he said he was \u201cproud\u201d that Scotland hosted <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailyrecord.co.uk\/all-about\/trident-faslane\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Trident.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Last week he re-stated his support of the <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailyrecord.co.uk\/all-about\/trident-faslane\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">deadly weapons<\/a> and said \u201cIt\u2019s really important when circumstances change for that to happen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">He made the comments the day before Starmer announced he was buying 12 new US-made fighter jets, which are capable of carrying conventional weapons as well as American <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailyrecord.co.uk\/all-about\/trident-faslane\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">nuclear bombs.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Speaking exclusively to the Sunday Mail Murray said the First Minister and his party should review their opposition to nukes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">He said: \u201cAny responsible <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailyrecord.co.uk\/all-about\/scottish-government\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">government<\/a> has to make sure they put their national security and the safety of their own people first.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cScots only have to turn on their TVs and pick up their newspapers to read about the fact that there is a changing global instability.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cI do think the <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailyrecord.co.uk\/all-about\/scottish-government\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Scottish Government<\/a> should readdress it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cDefence is really important and the two key things that come from that defence posture are jobs and growth in Scotland.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Murray said the country played a \u201cdisproportionate role\u201d in Britain\u2019s defence and he wanted to exploit the \u201cdividend\u201d that comes from that.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">He said: \u201cMy views on nuclear weapons changed some time ago but they have been underlined and emphasised by the fact that the issue of nuclear weapons and deterrence have become a huge global stability issue.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cFor the Scottish government to tell Rolls Royce, one of the most respected British institutions, that they will not contribute to them investing in a highly skilled welding academy in Glasgow tells the public that they don\u2019t care about jobs, growth and opportunities for the future.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cThat is a huge part of the defence dividend we should be trying to capture. Places like Babcock and BAE systems are hiring foreign welders from the Philippines and South Africa to do the work local people should be doing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cSo yes their stance should change, not just on defensive nuclear but on civilian nuclear as well.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/1_Dave-DooganPNG.png\" alt=\"SNP defence spokesperson Dave Doogan\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>SNP defence spokesperson Dave Doogan<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The SNP\u2019s Westminster defence spokesman accused Keir Starmer of pandering to Donald Trump to \u201cmake him relevant\u201d after agreeing to buy a dozen new fighter jets capable of transporting US nuclear weapons.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Dave Doogan, MP for Angus and Perthshire Glens, said his party\u2019s stance on nuclear was in line with the Scottish population and said the UK Government was not being honest about the country\u2019s own nuclear capability.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">He said: \u201c The SNP\u2019s position on nuclear remains resolute insofar as we\u2019re against it. We believe we\u2019re firmly in step with the vast majority of civil society in Scotland on that point.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cIan Murray, consistent with many other issues, is not in step with the majority of civil society in Scotland.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cI\u2019ve spoken to armed forces professionals who deal with the nuclear deterrent and nobody talks about it in the triumphant way in which Westminster politicians of the two main parties do.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cThey know keenly that nuclear weapons are an evil. They would see it as a necessary evil, I take a different view.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Doogan said the public were \u201cbeing taken for mugs\u201d by Starmer following the announcement about the dozen F-35A jets and said the US would really be in control if it came to delivering nuclear attacks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">He said: \u201cThe announcement is an absolute disgrace. The Americans have instructed the United Kingdom to not buy 12 F-35B variants, which is the vertical takeoff model that the UK wanted, and swap them for 12 \u2018A\u2019 variants that can\u2019t be operated off the UK\u2019s aircraft carriers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cThey have to operate off land so they can carry America\u2019s nuclear weapons for America, store them in the United kingdom and launch them in a way that America determines, without a debate or a manifesto commitment on any of this.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cPeople are being taken for mugs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Doogan said the purchase will see the UK \u201cbecome an arms-length nuclear franchise for the United States\u201d and said: \u201cNo other nuclear power delivers another nuclear power\u2019s nuclear weapons.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cThere are five nuclear sharing nations in Europe who have agreed that in time of war they will assist with United States nuclear weapons.
