{"id":223655,"date":"2025-06-29T09:37:11","date_gmt":"2025-06-29T09:37:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/223655\/"},"modified":"2025-06-29T09:37:11","modified_gmt":"2025-06-29T09:37:11","slug":"richard-carapaz-ruled-out-of-tour-de-france-with-stomach-infection","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/223655\/","title":{"rendered":"Richard Carapaz ruled out of Tour de France with stomach infection"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Richard Carapaz will not race at this year\u2019s Tour de France due to a gastrointestinal infection, the Ecuadorian has confirmed.<\/p>\n<p>Carapaz, who was crowned the Tour\u2019s king of the mountains and won the overall combativity award in 2024, will not compete after symptoms of abdominal pain and a high fever while training for the race in Ecuador.<\/p>\n<p>He underwent several rounds of medical tests that revealed the infection, which was confirmed by additional scans and imaging, and is currently receiving antibiotics and medication.<\/p>\n<p>It comes less than a month after the 32-year-old record a podium finish at the Giro d\u2019Italia.<\/p>\n<p>Carapaz announced on his Instagram account that with \u201cgreat sadness\u201d he would be missing the Tour, which starts on July 5.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"instagram-media\" style=\"background: #FFF; border: 0; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: 0 0 1px 0 rgba(0,0,0,0.5),0 1px 10px 0 rgba(0,0,0,0.15); margin: 1px; max-width: 540px; min-width: 326px; padding: 0; width: calc(100% - 2px);\" data-instgrm-captioned=\"\" data-instgrm-permalink=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DLc9B4jopvC\/?utm_source=ig_embed&amp;utm_campaign=loading\" data-instgrm-version=\"14\">\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cNot the best news, but health always comes first,\u201d he said. \u201cThank you all for your messages and support.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jonathan Vaughters, CEO of Carapaz\u2019s team EF Education-EasyPost, said he was \u201cgutted\u201d for the Ecuadorian <a href=\"https:\/\/efprocycling.com\/racing\/richard-carapaz-out-of-tour-de-france-due-to-illness\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">in a statement<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe came out of the Giro with amazing form and was setting career-high power numbers in training,\u201d Vaughters said. \u201cHe sacrificed a lot to get to that level, so the timing really couldn\u2019t be worse.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe know how much the Tour means to him, so to lose him this close to the race is a real blow. He\u2019s a champion in every sense, and knowing him, I have no doubt this setback will only motivate him to come back stronger.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Carapaz has recorded six podium finishes across cycling\u2019s three Grand Tours; he won the Giro in 2019, finished second in 2022 and also recorded a second-place finish at the Vuelta de Espana in 2020. His best finish in the Tour de France was third in 2021.<\/p>\n<p>In July 2021, he won the gold medal in the road race at the 2020 Summer Olympics, becoming the first Ecuadorian cyclist to win a medal and only the second Ecuadorian in any sport to win a gold medal at the Olympic Games.<\/p>\n<p>Carapaz is now targeting a return in the Vuelta, which starts in Spain on August 23 and will last for three weeks.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHis goal?
