He’ll be raising money for The Sick Children’s Trust to thank the charity for supporting his daughter, Lauren O’Leary and her partner, Bradley Vaughan, with a free place to stay when his granddaughter, Ayda, was rushed to hospital.

After a family day out in February 2024, 20-month-old Ayda Vaughan suddenly collapsed at home and became unresponsive. Her parents immediately called an ambulance which took her to Basildon Hospital.

As the doctors worked to stabilise her, Ayda experienced two and a half hours of seizures, requiring intubation and breathing support.

Ayda underwent several tests, including close monitoring of her brain activity. With her condition critical, Ayda was transferred to The Royal London Hospital for specialist care.

<img decoding="async" loading="lazy" id="app" src="https://www.europesays.com/uk/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/wellnesswatch-whatsapppromoapp.png" alt="Obsessed with health? Ayda was diagnosed with meningitis, which caused her body to shut down. After five days in hospital, she was thankfully able to return home.

Throughout Ayda’s time at The Royal London Hospital, Lauren and Bradley were supported by The Sick Children’s Trust at Stevenson House. Located just a short walk from the hospital, Stevenson House made sure they could always be by Ayda’s side, completely free of charge.

To thank the charity, the family held a fundraising race night, and Terry is now taking on the London Marathon to raise further funds.

Terry said: “It was really worrying when Bradley called to say Ayda was seriously ill and they were being blue-lighted to hospital. We rushed to get some things for them and got to the hospital where Ayda was surrounded by doctors, tubes and wires. You couldn’t help but fear the worst.

“Being transferred to the Royal London Hospital, an hour away from their home in Benfleet, added even more stress. But knowing they could stay close to Ayda at Stevenson House was really reassuring for all of us.

“When Ayda was moved back to Basildon Hospital, Brad and I went to the ‘Home from Home’ to collect their things. I could see straight away how amazing the facilities were and how much of a difference the charity makes to parents.

“As we left, I said to Bradley that we should do some fundraising for The Sick Children’s Trust, and he suggested that I could do the marathon!”

Lauren said: “Stevenson House was such an important support for us. Without it, we would have to travel to and from the hospital, which just wasn’t an option with Ayda so poorly.

“Staying in a hotel would have been too expensive. The Sick Children’s Trust took all that extra worry away and made sure we could always be by her side.

“Ayda’s doing a lot better now. She is still being monitored as there’s a risk she could have the seizures again if she gets another infection.

“We’ve all been trained on how to administer specialist medication if that happens, but thankfully she’s doing well at home.”

Terry will be one of 11 runners taking on the London Marathon in support The Sick Children’s Trust.

FUND-RACING: Grandfather Terry O’Leary will be running in the London Marathon for the Sick Children’s Trust

Terry added: “I’ve been applying to run the London Marathon for years but was never successful. As soon as it was suggested I run for the charity, it was a no brainer.

“We’ll always be grateful to The Sick Children’s Trust for the support they gave Lauren and Brad, and we want to give back as much as possible. We raised £1,470 already at our charity race night and plan to do a lot more fundraising.

“My training is going well and I’m looking forward to the day, although it’s turning out to be tougher than I expected! Having family cheering me along the route, and my special laces that say ‘You can do it granddad’ will definitely help me make it to reach the finish line.”

For more information about Terry’s fundraising visit his Just Giving page https://www.justgiving.com/page/alison-oleary-1726411755500

For more information About The Sick Children’s Trust visit sickchildrenstrust.org

Location: Tilbury

RELIEVED FAMILY: Lauren and Bradley were glad to be able to stay at Stevenson House when their daughter…

[7757
748,393,14295,4884,12893,257,16,15
0":"post-22378","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-london","8":"tag-britain","9":"tag-england","10":"tag-essex-chronicle","11":"tag-great-britain","12":"tag-inyourarea-community","13":"tag-london","14":"tag-uk","15":"tag-united-kingdom
["GET
