{"id":225032,"date":"2025-06-29T22:03:09","date_gmt":"2025-06-29T22:03:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/225032\/"},"modified":"2025-06-29T22:03:09","modified_gmt":"2025-06-29T22:03:09","slug":"i-always-knew-i-was-capable-of-it-gabriel-bortoleto-delighted-with-first-f1-points-in-austria-amid-fernando-alonso-battle","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/225032\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018I always knew I was capable of it\u2019 \u2013 Gabriel Bortoleto delighted with first F1 points in Austria amid Fernando Alonso battle"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"typography-module_body-s-regular__ul7F5 typography-module_md_body-m-regular__d9VRg typography-module_lg_body-l-regular__dPa5z\">Gabriel Bortoleto claimed his maiden points in F1 at the Austrian Grand Prix, rounding off Kick Sauber\u2019s strongest weekend yet as Nico Hulkenberg also finished in the top 10.<\/p>\n<p class=\"typography-module_body-s-regular__ul7F5 typography-module_md_body-m-regular__d9VRg typography-module_lg_body-l-regular__dPa5z\">The Red Bull Ring brought the Brazilian success in his junior career, including his first F2 victory last season, and those previous performances carried forward into the Grand Prix as he achieved his best F1 result so far.<\/p>\n<p class=\"typography-module_body-s-regular__ul7F5 typography-module_md_body-m-regular__d9VRg typography-module_lg_body-l-regular__dPa5z\">After showing improved pace throughout practice, the 20-year-old progressed to the final part of <a class=\"text-brand-hot-red underline decoration-1 hover:decoration-[3px]\" href=\"https:\/\/www.formula1.com\/en\/latest\/article\/highlights-watch-the-qualifying-action-from-austria-as-norris-takes-dominant.2GJTVgpx1LdKgJYd0Wf4IE\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Qualifying<\/a> for the first time this year, eventually <a class=\"text-brand-hot-red underline decoration-1 hover:decoration-[3px]\" href=\"https:\/\/www.formula1.com\/en\/latest\/article\/its-always-been-a-special-place-bortoleto-reflects-on-q3-appearance-in.3EcCKxgBfCx0N3SRzCiAS6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">netting P8 on the grid<\/a> and beating the likes of <a class=\"text-brand-hot-red underline decoration-1 hover:decoration-[3px]\" href=\"https:\/\/www.formula1.com\/en\/latest\/article\/antonelli-handed-three-place-grid-penalty-for-silverstone-after-verstappen.7GIpi2rLTwmOXHW5VfgFWT\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mercedes\u2019 Kimi Antonelli.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"typography-module_body-s-regular__ul7F5 typography-module_md_body-m-regular__d9VRg typography-module_lg_body-l-regular__dPa5z\">He remained in that position when the chequered flag fell, negotiating two pit stops and a meaningful on-track battle with Fernando Alonso, who is coincidentally a <a class=\"text-brand-hot-red underline decoration-1 hover:decoration-[3px]\" href=\"https:\/\/www.formula1.com\/en\/latest\/article\/how-alonso-saved-sauber-rookie-bortoletos-racing-career-before-his-back-to.6k1iCUQENH0DHizo70MPRq\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">member of his management team<\/a> and mentored him through his stints in F3 and F2.<\/p>\n<p class=\"typography-module_body-s-regular__ul7F5 typography-module_md_body-m-regular__d9VRg typography-module_lg_body-l-regular__dPa5z\">\u201cI feel like we had a very intense battle \u2013 probably the most intense battle I have had in F1 so far,\u201d Bortoleto said after the race on the late fight with Alonso. \u201cOutside, inside, and then playing with the blue flags as well with [Lando] Norris and then Oscar [Piastri].<\/p>\n<p class=\"typography-module_body-s-regular__ul7F5 typography-module_md_body-m-regular__d9VRg typography-module_lg_body-l-regular__dPa5z\">\u201cIt has been a crazy one, you know? Nothing to say, just a great battle and I\u2019m glad that I\u2019ve been able to fight with Fernando until the end of the race for these points.<\/p>\n<p class=\"typography-module_body-s-regular__ul7F5 typography-module_md_body-m-regular__d9VRg typography-module_lg_body-l-regular__dPa5z\">\u201cWe did a great job on the pit stops, we did a great job with the strategy. I feel like we did everything that was in our hands. I just hope that we can keep this up \u2013 a weekend like this repeating every single weekend\u2026 I think we can score more points in the season and have great results.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"typography-module_body-s-regular__ul7F5 typography-module_md_body-m-regular__d9VRg typography-module_lg_body-l-regular__dPa5z\">Sauber elected to swap Hulkenberg and Bortoleto after the first round of pit stops, allowing the rookie to chase down a bigger points haul. While the gap to Alonso started at nine seconds, he rapidly closed it down and embarked on a multi-lap battle with his mentor.<\/p>\n<p class=\"typography-module_body-s-regular__ul7F5 typography-module_md_body-m-regular__d9VRg typography-module_lg_body-l-regular__dPa5z\">The Spaniard put up an impressive defence, especially with the added challenge of allowing frontrunners Norris and Piastri to pass under blue flags, and held onto P7. He was later spotted congratulating Bortoleto on his mighty drive to take four points.<\/p>\n<p class=\"typography-module_body-s-regular__ul7F5 typography-module_md_body-m-regular__d9VRg typography-module_lg_body-l-regular__dPa5z\">Asked whether it was a relief to finally score, Bortoleto said: \u201cI always knew I was capable of it. I\u2019m not in Formula 1 for a random reason. It\u2019s just good to be in the points finally \u2013 more for the team than for myself because they really deserve to have points and everything.<\/p>\n<p class=\"typography-module_body-s-regular__ul7F5 typography-module_md_body-m-regular__d9VRg typography-module_lg_body-l-regular__dPa5z\">\u201cFor myself, I\u2019m here because I want to win one day. I\u2019m not going to be happy because I scored a few points, you know? But for sure it\u2019s already an achievement. We should be happy with every small achievement and we are going in the right direction to achieve our bigger dream, which will one day be winning championships.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"typography-module_body-s-regular__ul7F5 typography-module_md_body-m-regular__d9VRg typography-module_lg_body-l-regular__dPa5z\">It was Sauber\u2019s most successful weekend yet in 2025 as Hulkenberg bounced back from starting last on the grid to gain 11 positions and secure another two points, bringing the team into a close fight with Aston Martin and Haas in the <a class=\"text-brand-hot-red underline decoration-1 hover:decoration-[3px]\" href=\"https:\/\/www.formula1.com\/en\/results\/2025\/team\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">team standings.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"typography-module_body-s-regular__ul7F5 typography-module_md_body-m-regular__d9VRg typography-module_lg_body-l-regular__dPa5z\">\u201cObviously got a bit of help from the race circumstances \u2013 a few cars dropping out \u2013 but nevertheless, I think it was a solid race from us,\u201d Hulkenberg said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"typography-module_body-s-regular__ul7F5 typography-module_md_body-m-regular__d9VRg typography-module_lg_body-l-regular__dPa5z\">\u201cVery positive obviously, double points. From last, I think that\u2019s pretty decent and I\u2019m not sure I could have asked for much more today from there.<\/p>\n<p class=\"typography-module_body-s-regular__ul7F5 typography-module_md_body-m-regular__d9VRg typography-module_lg_body-l-regular__dPa5z\">\u201cSince Barcelona there\u2019s been a change of momentum and I think we have much more of a grip now on the car and on the season.
