A BOSS at Scotland\u2019s biggest prison is being investigated over claims they splashed out on an air fryer for an inmate.<\/p>\n

Stunned rank-and-file officers complained to Barlinnie top brass about the pricey gift, according to insiders.<\/p>\n

A source revealed staff had been left baffled at how the kitchen gadget had made it past guards at the notorious Glasgow<\/a> jail<\/a>, which houses<\/a> some of the country\u2019s worst criminals.<\/p>\n

They now believe it was approved and paid for out of a manager\u2019s own pocket \u2014 sparking accusations of \u201cspecial treatment\u201d.<\/p>\n

An insider said: \u201cNobody could work<\/a> out how the long-term con came to have a top-end air fryer.<\/p>\n

\u201cThen it turned out a jail boss had forked out for it, which is just astonishing.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf it was a basic grade officer they\u2019d have been sacked on the spot.<\/p>\n

“Everyone was shocked and it seemed nothing was going to be done until staff kicked up a stink.<\/p>\n

Last night Tory MSP Annie Wells backed outraged officers. <\/p>\n

She said: \u201cScots will be gobsmacked that a Barlinnie manager thought it was appropriate to buy an inmate an air fryer.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs well as a potential fire<\/a> risk, it blurs what should be a clear boundary between staff and prisoners.\u201d<\/p>\n

A spokeswoman said: \u201cThis matter is subject to an investigation<\/a>. <\/p>\n

Barlinnie, which opened in 1882, will be replaced by HMP Glasgow.<\/p>\n

It should have been built by 2019 for \u00a3100millon but has been delayed until 2028, with the bill rocketing to \u00a31billion.<\/p>\n
