{"id":225281,"date":"2025-06-30T00:25:18","date_gmt":"2025-06-30T00:25:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/225281\/"},"modified":"2025-06-30T00:25:18","modified_gmt":"2025-06-30T00:25:18","slug":"black-sabbath-awarded-freedom-of-birmingham","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/225281\/","title":{"rendered":"Black Sabbath awarded freedom of Birmingham"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Black Sabbath have been awarded the freedom of Birmingham as they prepare to play together as a group for the first time in 20 years.<\/p>\n<p>Founding members of the heavy metal band \u2013 formed in the city in 1968 \u2013 were presented with scrolls and medals at a ceremony at the weekend.<\/p>\n<p>Terence \u201cGeezer\u201d Butler, Tony Iommi, Ozzy Osbourne and Bill Ward were recognised for their significance to the cultural and musical identity of Birmingham and as pioneers of heavy metal in the city and beyond.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>The band recorded eight albums selling more than 75 million copies worldwide, and are preparing for their Back To The Beginning farewell show on July 5.<\/p>\n<p>Osbourne warned he \u201cmay be sitting down\u201d for his final performance at Villa Park because of health problems.<\/p>\n<p>He said the reunion concert was conceived by his wife Sharon.<\/p>\n<p>The band were inducted into the Rock &amp; Roll Hall of Fame in 2006, awarded a Lifetime Ivor Novello Songwriting Award in 2015 and presented with a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2019.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking at the freedom of the city ceremony, Osbourne said: \u201cI first put an advert in a music store in town. If these guys hadn\u2019t come to my door, I wouldn\u2019t be sitting here now.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt seems to have flown by so quickly. It\u2019s amazing. I think about my dad, who went into debt to buy me a microphone. If only he could be here now. I think he would be very proud.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m a Brummie and I always will be a Brummie. Birmingham forever!\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>Butler said: \u201cThis is a great working class city, and we\u2019re all working class, from Aston.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe weren\u2019t given a chance when we started out, but Birmingham has always been behind us. People used to make fun of our accents, but we\u2019re all proud Birmingham people and we love this city. It\u2019s one of the greatest cities ever, it\u2019s given the world so much and we\u2019re proud to be here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Iommi added: \u201cIt\u2019s a great thing to receive. Birmingham is our home, and we love what Birmingham has done for us. We\u2019ve got the bridge and the bench, things like that. We\u2019re very grateful.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ward said: \u201cIt\u2019s completely overwhelming. I\u2019m so proud to be an Astonian. That\u2019s where I got my attitude.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was blessed \u2013 and cursed! \u2013 to meet Tony when I was 15, and I\u2019m so proud that I got to know Geezer and Ozzy. They\u2019re my brothers.
