{"id":225621,"date":"2025-06-30T03:34:08","date_gmt":"2025-06-30T03:34:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/225621\/"},"modified":"2025-06-30T03:34:08","modified_gmt":"2025-06-30T03:34:08","slug":"prince-william-has-big-plans-on-princess-dianas-birthday-this-year","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/225621\/","title":{"rendered":"Prince William Has Big Plans on Princess Diana&#8217;s Birthday This Year"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> NEED TO KNOW<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Prince William is marking the second anniversary of his campaign to end homelessness<\/li>\n<li>On July 1 \u2014 what would have been Princess Diana\u2019s 64th birthday \u2014 William will visit the Sheffield center to see the impact firsthand<\/li>\n<li>The Prince of Wales praises the innovative efforts of local centers, saying, \u201cI\u2019m immensely proud&#8230;Keep going!\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_2-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> <a href=\"https:\/\/people.com\/tag\/prince-william\/\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Prince William<\/a> has chosen a deeply meaningful date to spotlight the progress of his mission to end homelessness \u2014 what would have been <a href=\"https:\/\/people.com\/tag\/princess-diana\/\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Princess Diana<\/a>\u2019s 64th birthday.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_4-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> On July 1, William will travel to Sheffield in northern England to mark the <a href=\"https:\/\/people.com\/prince-william-launches-homelessness-project-uk-tour-homewards-7553079\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">second anniversary of his Homewards initiative<\/a>, which aims to <a href=\"https:\/\/people.com\/prince-william-mission-end-homelessness-inspired-mom-princess-diana-7552673\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">make homelessness \u201crare, brief and unrepeated.\u201d<\/a> The cause is one that has long resonated with him \u2014 inspired by the compassion and advocacy of his late mother.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_6-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> As children, William and his brother <a href=\"https:\/\/people.com\/tag\/prince-harry\/\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Prince Harry<\/a> were taken by Diana to visit shelters, where she helped shine a light on the humanity behind homelessness. William has carried that torch, becoming patron of organizations Diana once supported, including <a href=\"https:\/\/centrepoint.org.uk\/\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"externalLink\" data-ordinal=\"2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Centrepoint<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/passage.org.uk\/\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"externalLink\" data-ordinal=\"3\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The Passage<\/a>.\n<\/p>\n<p> Prince William visiting one of the Homewards centers, Bournemouth, England, in September 2023.<\/p>\n<p>Chris Jackson\/Getty Images<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_9-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> Across the six pilot areas, more than 100 projects are already underway \u2014 and one of the most significant breakthroughs has been securing over $50 million in financing from Lloyds Bank to support the development of housing across these regions. Homewards calls the investment a \u201cgroundbreaking moment,\u201d one they hope will inspire other institutions to unlock new streams of funding for affordable homes.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_11-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> Ahead of his visit, Prince William released an open letter to the six participating regions \u2014 Sheffield, Newport in South Wales, Aberdeen in Scotland, Northern Ireland, Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole and Lambeth in London \u2014 commending their progress and urging continued momentum as they are in &#8220;delivery mode.&#8221;\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_13-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> As he prepared for his outing, William released an open letter to the six participating areas \u2013 as well Sheffield they are Newport in south Wales, Aberdeen in Scotland, Northern Ireland and Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole and Lambeth, London. He said they are now very much in &#8220;delivery mode&#8221; as the second year comes to an end.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_15-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> &#8220;Your experiences are what makes Homewards unique and powerful,&#8221; William wrote. &#8220;We have the ability to harness our collective capabilities, expertise, and resources towards this common cause. I am immensely proud to say that your collective effort has already allowed us to achieve lasting impact.&#8221;\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_17-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> &#8220;I am confident we can lead and inspire understanding, empathy and optimism that homelessness can be ended,&#8221; he continued. &#8220;Focus is also important, and you have identified the groups particularly at risk of homelessness in your locations to drive solutions that show it is possible to prevent their homelessness.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p> Princess Diana at an event involving homelessness charity Centrepoint.<\/p>\n<p>Tim Graham Photo Library via Getty<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_20-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> William added, &#8220;While visiting the six locations, I have been inspired by the motivation, creativity, and expertise that is embodied in each location and the tangible difference you are making for some of society\u2019s most vulnerable.&#8221;\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_22-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> &#8220;Keep going!&#8221; he signed off.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_24-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> Reflecting on the program\u2019s progress, Lydia Stazen \u2014 former Executive Director of the Institute of Global Homelessness and a member of the Homewards National Expert Panel \u2014 says the initiative is \u201cexactly where I would expect the program to be at this point. The networks have been built, the foundations have been laid and we are seeing really concrete outcomes.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_26-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> She adds that Homewards came at exactly the right time for the sector. \u00a0After the COVID pandemic, levels of burnout of frontline workers and executives were \u201cextremely high,&#8221; she says. &#8220;Homewards was perfectly timed to bring in that fresh energy and bring in some new partners and resources, which was so desperately needed at that point.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p> Prince William, with Homewards supporter Geri Halliwell Horner at an event in London in June 2023.<\/p>\n<p>Finnbarr Webster\/Getty Images<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_29-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> Polly Neate, former CEO of U.K. charities Shelter and Women\u2019s Aid, says Homewards is confronting one of the biggest challenges in the fight against homelessness: the widespread sense of disempowerment and defeat.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_31-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> \u201cHaving somebody like Prince William really being very clear that it is possible to prevent homelessness, it is possible to end it, is hugely impactful and we are already seeing that,\u201d she says.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_33-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> \u201cDuring my time at Shelter \u2014 and before \u2014 we have seen other joined-up initiatives that have sought to tackle homelessness and those have been really valuable. But they have, in the main, focused on crisis intervention,&#8221; she continues. &#8220;We need to get out of this idea that crisis intervention is going to end homelessness. That\u2019s because the primary causes of homelessness are systemic.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_35-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> <strong>Can&#8217;t get enough of PEOPLE&#8217;s Royals coverage?\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/people.com\/people-royals-newsletter-sign-up-8692768\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sign up for our free Royals newsletter<\/a>\u00a0to get the latest updates on Kate Middleton, Meghan Markle and more!<\/strong>\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_37-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> \u201cWhat Homewards is doing at the local level is demonstrating how those systems can work differently in order to prevent and end homelessness in those localities,&#8221; she says.\n<\/p>\n<p> Prince William speaks to staff at Pret a Manger &#8212; a supporter of the Homewards program &#8212; in Bournemouth, in Sept. 2023.<\/p>\n<p>Chris Jackson\/Getty Images<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_40-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> The Prince of Wales has played a pivotal role in setting Homewards apart \u2014 and driving its early success.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_42-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> His leadership brings &#8220;a particular type of figure who isn\u2019t found in other communities,&#8221; says Stazen, pointing to his ability to convene, inspire and motivate action.&#8221;\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_44-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> &#8220;I think it is why Homewards has been able to get where it\u2019s got in two years because there is that excitement and leadership \u2014 and that comes [in the Prince\u2019s case] from a really heartfelt place,&#8221; she says.\n<\/p>\n<p> Prince William visits Lambeth, London on the one-year anniversary of the Homewards program, in July 2023.<\/p>\n<p>Maja Smiejkowska &#8211; WPA Pool\/Getty<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_47-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> For William, Homewards isn\u2019t about replacing or overshadowing existing efforts to combat homelessness \u2014 it\u2019s about empowering new, innovative ideas and supporting practical projects.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_49-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> &#8220;It\u2019s about the people who hold trust within those local communities, and those are the people who are really going to make it happen,&#8221; Neate says of the local experts who deliver results.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_53-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> During his July 1 visit, Prince William will begin the day by meeting with representatives from the six U.K. regions piloting locally tailored solutions through Homewards.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_55-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> He\u2019ll then visit a school in Sheffield to see the impact of a new early intervention model aimed at identifying young people at risk of homelessness and offering targeted support. Known as &#8220;Upstream,&#8221; the program is inspired by the Geelong Project in Australia, which achieved a 40% reduction in youth homelessness and a 20% drop in early school leavers.
