There are plenty more effective ab and core exercises out there, and adding a dumbbell into the mix is a great way to level things up.<\/p>\n<p>Thanks to one of my favorite trainers, Kirra Mitlo, I\u2019ve got a seven-move dumbbell routine you\u2019ll want to try.<\/p>\n<p>This dynamic circuit takes you through a variety of positions, from lying down to standing, kneeling and holding a plank. With the dumbbell held above your shoulder on one side and marching on the other side, you are forcing your core muscles to work hard and stabilize your body.<\/p>\n<p>For a bonus trainer top tip, Mitlo says to make sure your marches are slow and exhale as you bring your knee up in the march. &#8220;This will help you engage your core!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>2. High Plank Dumbbell Pull Through <\/p>\n<p class=\"vanilla-image-block\" style=\"padding-top:56.21%;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/xGhXN8BhpddDNfvJPNfEhZ.gif\" alt=\"trainer Kirra Mitlo doing Dumbbell plank pull throughs\"   loading=\"lazy\" data-original-mos=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/xGhXN8BhpddDNfvJPNfEhZ.gif\" data-pin-media=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/xGhXN8BhpddDNfvJPNfEhZ.gif\"\/><\/p>\n<p>(Image credit: Kirra Mitlo)<\/p>\n<p>When you come into the high plank position, Mitlo says it is helpful to have your feet spread further apart to make for a more stable base.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;From here you really want to focus on keeping your core and glutes tight (sometimes it even helps to think of squeezing your butt),&#8221; she adds, &#8220;As you are reaching to drag the dumbbell from under you.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>3. As Mitlo explains: \u201cBy executing a row on all fours with your opposite leg extended, your core is going to be turned on to help provide balance during the rows.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her tip for better stability?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cExhale as you row the dumbbell towards your body, and think of squeezing your glutes for extra stability.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>4. Bear Crawl Step Outs (on dumbbells) <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>10 reps total (stepping out and in is one rep)<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"vanilla-image-block\" style=\"padding-top:56.21%;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/qo6C2nXn6rsrLowvd46XL8.gif\" alt=\"trainer Kirra Mitlo doing dumbbell bear crawl step outs\"   loading=\"lazy\" data-original-mos=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/qo6C2nXn6rsrLowvd46XL8.gif\" data-pin-media=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/qo6C2nXn6rsrLowvd46XL8.gif\"\/><\/p>\n<p>(Image credit: Kirra Mitlo)<\/p>\n<p>This is a deep core burner. \u201cWe\u2019ll be doing this move with hands on a set of flat, stable dumbbells, which gives your wrists a more comfortable position,\u201d says Mitlo<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe goal is to keep your knees hovering over the ground in the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tomsguide.com\/features\/i-did-the-7-minute-bear-crawl-exercise-every-day-for-a-week-here-are-my-results\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.tomsguide.com\/features\/i-did-the-7-minute-bear-crawl-exercise-every-day-for-a-week-here-are-my-results\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">bear crawl <\/a>position and your butt low as you step out.\u201d That tension and control throughout the move, she explains, \u201cwill really strengthen your core and deep core muscles.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>5. Dumbbell Alternating Shoulder Tap <\/p>\n<p class=\"vanilla-image-block\" style=\"padding-top:56.21%;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/u8omuAfuSPWjZCV4tCtopJ.gif\" alt=\"trainer Kirra Mitlo doing dumbbell-Shoulder-Taps\"   loading=\"lazy\" data-original-mos=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/u8omuAfuSPWjZCV4tCtopJ.gif\" data-pin-media=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/u8omuAfuSPWjZCV4tCtopJ.gif\"\/><\/p>\n<p>(Image credit: Kirra Mitlo)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStart with a hand on each dumbbell and your feet spread apart for a stable base,\u201d says Mitlo. \u201cLift one hand off the dumbbell to tap your opposite shoulder, then repeat on the other side.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;re feeling wobbly, she suggests, \u201ctry to spread your feet further apart and think of squeezing your butt cheeks \u2014 it really helps with stability.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>6. Weighted Dumbbell Windshield Wipers<\/p>\n<p class=\"vanilla-image-block\" style=\"padding-top:56.21%;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/jJV4aQ9w7WTrgjXerJrWGW.gif\" alt=\"trainer doing weighted windsheild wipers with a dumbbell\"   loading=\"lazy\" data-original-mos=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/jJV4aQ9w7WTrgjXerJrWGW.gif\" data-pin-media=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/jJV4aQ9w7WTrgjXerJrWGW.gif\"\/><\/p>\n<p>(Image credit: Kirra Mitlo)<\/p>\n<p>This twisting core move is all about control. \u201cHolding the dumbbell above your chest helps remind you to keep your core tight and your arms locked,\u201d says Mitlo. \u201cKeep your lower back planted on the floor the entire time, only let your hips lift as you rotate side to side.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The challenge comes from resisting momentum, known as anti-rotation, and staying slow and steady to work your obliques and deep core muscles.<\/p>\n<p>7. Dumbbell Hold + Glute March (dumbbells pressed over chest) <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>20 reps total (20 marches)\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"vanilla-image-block\" style=\"padding-top:56.21%;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/KusTacVNYDB2CAuKN28oeg.gif\" alt=\"trainer Kirra Mitlo doing weighted glute marches with a press\"   loading=\"lazy\" data-original-mos=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/KusTacVNYDB2CAuKN28oeg.gif\" data-pin-media=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/KusTacVNYDB2CAuKN28oeg.gif\"\/><\/p>\n<p>(Image credit: Kirra Mitlo)<\/p>\n<p>This move may look simple, but it\u2019s a real test of core control. \u201cThe <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tomsguide.com\/news\/i-did-the-glute-bridge-march-every-day-for-a-week-heres-what-happened\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.tomsguide.com\/news\/i-did-the-glute-bridge-march-every-day-for-a-week-heres-what-happened\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">glute march<\/a> with the dumbbell held over your chest is a great way to challenge your core and glutes,\u201d says Mitlo.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs you raise one leg off the floor, the key is keeping your hips as still as possible.
