He said: \u201cQuite frankly it\u2019s bureaucratic madness, confusing for customers, and completely unnecessary given the UK has some of the highest food standards in the world.\u201d<\/p>\n
Mr Machin said \u201cThe government\u2019s SPS deal with the EU will be gamechanging, and it can\u2019t come soon enough!\u201d<\/p>\n
A letter this month from the Provision Trade Federation, which represents food producers, to the environment secretary, Steve Reed, said the lack of clarity was \u201cextremely unsatisfactory\u201d and had left the industry in \u201ccomplete limbo\u201d.<\/p>\n
The letter, which was signed by several other bodies including the National Farmers\u2019 Union, Dairy UK and the Food and Drink Exporters Association, urged the government to abandon the plan, or at least put in place a six-month delay to help businesses to prepare.<\/p>\n
The letter said: \u201cWe would strongly urge you to draw a line under this poorly handled chapter and make the earliest possible announcement to that effect.\u201d<\/p>\n
A spokesperson for the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs said: \u201cMinisters are carefully considering the evidence provided in the recent \u2018not for EU\u2019 labelling consultation.<\/p>\n
