And according to Lynch, Liverpool appear to have made certain promises to Guehi during initial conversations.

“It’s an interesting one because all I’m hearing is that he wants guarantees around game time,” the reporter told Anfield Index.

“What I’ve been told over the last couple of days is that he is keen on the move, so I guess he has had those reassurances that he isn’t going to come and sit on the bench. I guess it’s genuine competition and the ability to displace Konate will be there.”

READ MORE: ‘Confident’ claim made over Liverpool and Alexander Isak as Newcastle’s true asking price becomes clear

“They must be telling him something that makes him think he’s getting some minutes,” Lynch adds.

“I don’t believe he’s spoken to the manager yet. I think it’s in a position where those talks are at sporting director level at the moment. But they must have a plan or something that’s made him give the green light to say that he wants to come.”

Ibrahima Konate’s future more uncertain than ever

While this will be good news for those fans hoping for Guehi to arrive, it does throw further doubt on the future of Konate.

That is not to say that the Frenchman would not start over Guehi. Perhaps he would. But in the long-term, Liverpool seemingly think the England international is going to play a great deal.

Clearly, it is no bad thing to have three top centre-backs, plus Joe Gomez, fighting for two spots. Virgil van Dijk is not getting younger and it may be wise to start managing his minutes at some stage, too. Guehi could allow them to do that.

Nevertheless, should the Palace captain arrive at Anfield this summer, it will feel more likely than ever that Konate is due to depart.

These two defenders can co-exist in the same squad, but one of them is going to be left disappointed. By the sounds of things, Liverpool don’t think it will be Guehi.

Liverpool’s pursuit of Marc Guehi has taken some supporters by surprise this summer.
