Anyone could be fined over \u00a3100 for making an innocent mistake after the rules were brought into effect earlier than originally planned.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \"><a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.walesonline.co.uk\/news\/world-news\/france-ban-common-object-public-31754738\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">It was previously reported that the major smoking ban would <\/a><a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.walesonline.co.uk\/news\/world-news\/france-ban-common-object-public-31754738\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"apply to a range of public places,Link opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">apply to a range of public places,<\/a> including popular <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.walesonline.co.uk\/all-about\/tourism\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"tourist spotsLink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">tourist spots<\/a> such as <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bristolpost.co.uk\/all-about\/beaches\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"beachesLink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">beaches<\/a>, parks, and public gardens. The rules also extend to cover outside schools, bus stops, and sports venues.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The rules should have officially become law on Tuesday, July 1, but <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.france24.com\/en\/france\/20250628-france-bans-smoking-in-beaches-parks-and-bus-shelters-from-sunday\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">officials brought forward the start of this proposed law to Sunday, June 29<\/a>. The measure was approved in order to help limit the damage that smoking has on young children.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">This ban builds on the existing laws in France that prohibit smoking in certain places. Since 2008, it has been against the law to smoke in restaurants and nightclubs, with more places included to protect children from the harms of passive smoking.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Anyone caught breaking the ban will be fined \u20ac135 (which works out to \u00a3113). The country&#8217;s minister for children, health and family, Catherine Vautrin, said the police would enforce the ban, but added that the public would be given the chance to &#8220;self-regulate.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/0_GettyImages-678103896.jpg\" alt=\"closeup of a young caucasian woman with purple nail polish in her fingernails smoking a cigarette sitting at a table in the terrace of a cafe outdoors\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>France will ban smoking in outdoor areas frequented by children(Image: Getty)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">In France, cafes and bar terraces have been excluded from the ban, meaning people may still smoke cigarettes there. The decree does not mention anything specific about electronic cigarettes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \"><a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.fr\/france\/article\/une-interdiction-de-fumer-en-terrasse-des-restaurants-les-francais-sont-largement-pour-exclusif_250573.html\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">A HuffPost France poll showed<\/a> that 68% of French people who responded are for tighter restrictions on smoking in public. Some are even calling for bans to continue, eventually extending to outdoor caf\u00e9s and restaurants.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">People in Britain might struggle to remember the rule, as the UK&#8217;s own smoking rules currently only apply indoors. Since July 2007, it has been illegal to smoke in enclosed public places and workplaces in the UK.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/1751292852_573_0_GettyImages-172159798.jpg\" alt=\"People caught ignoring the rules face a fine\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>People caught ignoring the rules face a fine<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \"><a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/c79ze8gv1w4o#:~:text=Instead%2C%20under%20the%20new%20Bill,that%20would%20work%20in%20practice.\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">It was reported in 2024 by the BBC<\/a> that the UK Government is considering similar action by extending legislation in England to outdoor areas like playgrounds and hospital grounds to &#8220;protect children and the most vulnerable from the harms of second-hand smoke&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u200cThe UK is moving towards creating a &#8220;smoke-free generation&#8221; through the <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/commonslibrary.parliament.uk\/research-briefings\/cbp-10150\/#:~:text=The%20Tobacco%20and%20Vapes%20Bill%202024%2D25%20(HC%20Bill%20121,of%20tobacco%20and%20vaping%20products.\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Tobacco and Vapes Bill<\/a>. This bill aims to prevent the sale of tobacco products to anyone born on or after January 1, 2009. This means that those who were 15 or younger in 2024 will never legally be able to purchase tobacco products.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The bill makes it an offence to sell tobacco products &#8211; including cigarettes, hand-rolled tobacco and cigars &#8211; to anyone who falls under this age demographic.
