It’s hard to go three feet at the All England Club without spying into a tennis star, but the majority of the star spotting, you would assume, comes on the courts. <\/p>\n

Not so in the media centre, where Mail Sport reporters are hard at it (soaking up the air conditioning between bursts of courtside drama) – and so to is Beatriz Haddad Maia. <\/p>\n

The number-21 seed was spotted warming up for her clash with Rebecca Smramkova in the hallways of the building, throwing an American football to make sure that her left arm was limber. <\/p>\n

Wimbledon’s eco-move<\/p>\n

Tennis fans are being encouraged to reduce plastic wastage \u2013 but going green comes with a \u00a35 price tag.<\/p>\n

Evian has launched a new recycled and reusable bottle, created specifically for the 2025 Championships.<\/p>\n

Spectators at SW19 are being encouraged to purchase the eco-friendly bottle, which can be refilled for free at one of the dedicated Evian stations throughout the grounds.<\/p>\n

This year the Club has more than tripled the number of mineral water refill points across SW19 with new additions in both hospitality and in debentures.<\/p>\n

Only a honoured few will get the chance to step onto court at Wimbledon, but this year, Dan Evans is among them after the veteran was handed a wildcard in SW19. <\/p>\n

Exclusively for Mail Sport, Evans talks through his routines and the unique rituals players indulge in ahead of starting their Wimbledon journeys. <\/p>\n

<\/a>Unpleasant reading for Medvedev <\/p>\n

With just the US Open left, Medvedev’s ‘Calendar R1’ (working title, feedback respected) remains in play. <\/p>\n

But it’s some way away from the Grand Slam form that the 29-year-old has grown to expect when he enters the draw. <\/p>\n

Tsitsipas feels the heat of his former Wimbledon champion coach, Mail Sport’s Ian Herbert notices<\/p>\n

Tsitsipas didn\u2019t seem to have delighted his coach Goran Ivanisevic on court 12. Goran unceremoniously barged past security guard to leave court 12 and didn\u2019t look happy, after Tsitsipas retired hurt having lost second set to unseeded Valentin Royer. There didn\u2019t seem much wrong with the way he was moving, though he\u2019d taken a medical timeout when the second set was slipping away from him. <\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Last time Ivanisevic was in a player box at Wimbledon, it belonged to Novak Djokovic. <\/p>\n

This is… somewhat different. <\/p>\n

\"LONDON,Wimbledon looks to capture global audience<\/p>\n

Wimbeldon had pushed by the start time of the singles finals to 4pm to ‘appeal to a global audience’.<\/p>\n

Traditionally the men’s and women’s Championship matches start at 1.30pm but this year they will follow the doubles.<\/p>\n

Chief Executive said this would see Wimbledon fall in line with tournaments like the Australian Open and help attract even more viewers around the world.<\/p>\n

She said: ‘We did it for a number of reasons, as we’ve thought about the way that the finals days have shaped up over a number of years.<\/p>\n

‘We made the decision because it was much fairer and more appropriate for the players.<\/p>\n

‘We’ve had doubles players having to wait longer to go on court, so this is much more predictable for them, for the crowds in the grounds, as well as at home.<\/p>\n

‘The finals days now build to a crescendo of those singles finals, which felt entirely appropriate.<\/p>\n

‘And then those singles finals will now be in front of the largest possible global audience at that time.’<\/p>\n

The fightback is on for the Briton after conceding the second set, with the British No2 claiming the third 6-4. <\/p>\n

They’re on serve in the fourth, but Norrie has brought up deuce against the Bautista Agut service game…<\/p>\n

Breaking:Stefanos Tsitsipas retires ahead of the third set<\/p>\n

More troubling news, as the number-24 seed is forced to take a medical timeout and receive treatment before eventually calling it a day against world No113 Valetin Royer. <\/p>\n

Royer had claimed the first set 6-3, and the second 6-2 before Tstisipas – like Medvedev, another 1990s-born player somewhat in the tennis wilderness – called it a day. <\/p>\n

Whether he will now hot-foot it to Centre Court to watch his girlfriend Paula Badosa (who herself struggles with back issues) against Katie Boulter remains to be seen. <\/p>\n

Now on No1 Court, we should be in for a doozy<\/p>\n

Jacob Fearnley is kicking off against hotly tipped teen Joao Fonseca, who has well as receiving daunting comparisons to a young Carlos Alcaraz – even typing this phrase ages me – he brings with him a legion of clamouring Brazilian fans. <\/p>\n

Wimbledon has by far the most civilised spectators of the four Grand Slams, but can the tourists shout down support for the home favourite? <\/p>\n

The pair have met once before, earlier this year at Canberra, which saw Fonseca claim the spoils. But Fearnley has proven himself imminently adaptable on all surfaces this season, and before the draw might have anticipated a second-round spot as a given. <\/p>\n

Popyrin battles back in the third set versus Fery<\/p>\n

Fery did well to cling onto the third set, but eventually fell 6-4 to allow Popyrin a route into the tie. <\/p>\n

But he’s still ahead, and has a rapturous crowd willing him on. <\/p>\n

I\u2019m super happy to be back, to be healthy. To compete at this beautiful tournament. I was really depressed last year that I couldn\u2019t feel this atmosphere. I\u2019m super happy with the performance. Happy to get through. <\/p><\/blockquote>\n

And just like that, Daniil Medvedev’s Wimbledon is over! A semi-finalist last year, but unable to get through the first day just 12 months on. <\/p>\n

Really concerning for fans of the 29-year-old, and it will be interesting to hear if heat was a factor as well as his uneven form this season. <\/p>\n

By the by, this is the first time Medvedev has ever exited the Grand Slam at this stage of the tournament. <\/p>\n

\"LONDON,All over for model Wimbledon starlet<\/p>\n

Aryna Sabalenka was clearly not mesmirised by the beauty of Carson Branstine on court after she just sealed a demolishing 6-1, 7-5 win against the Canadian qualifier. <\/p>\n

That was about as one-sided as many had feared, however…<\/p>\n

<\/a>Novak Djokovic is locked in<\/p>\n

The seven-time Wimbledon champion is well and truly locked in after the disappointment of the French Open.<\/p>\n

Remember that Federer won eight times here at SW19 so that carrot is still dangling for the Serb over the next fortnight.<\/p>\n

He kick starts his bid for glory tomorrow on Centre Court…<\/p>\n

Royal spectators Princess Beatrice and Duchess of York watch from Centre Court<\/p>\n

Princess Beatrice is representing the Royal Family at Wimbledon today as she attends with her mother Sarah Ferguson, the Duchess of York.<\/p>\n

Last year Beatrice attended day nine of the tournament with her husband, Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi, as they sat in the Royal Box to watch the quarter-final between Jannik Sinner and Daniil Medvedev, which was won by the Russian.<\/p>\n

According to reports, the Duchess of York has returned to the Royal Box for the first time in 24 years having been a regular at Wimbledon in the 1980s and 1990s.<\/p>\n

The pair were in their seats for the first match on court between returning champion Carlos Alcaraz and Fabio Fognini.<\/p>\n

\"Tennis\"TennisOliver Crawford becomes first Briton to falter in the heat<\/p>\n

The wildcard was able to claim the first set against Mattia Bellucci via tiebreak, but nothing more, after the Italian youngster ran away with the tie 6-7 (2-7), 6-3, 6-4, 6-4. <\/p>\n

Don’t fret, Oliver. Someone had to be first, after a morning of some excitement. <\/p>\n

\"Tennis<\/p>\n

Another year, another Wimbledon mugging – but how much does it really cost to visit the Championships well-watered? <\/p>\n

Here, Mail Sport investigates – have a look through, below. <\/p>\n

<\/a>Potential upset alert? <\/p>\n

Former US Open champion Daniil Medvedev is really having his feet held to the fire by unfancied Frenchman Benjamin Bonzi on No2 Court. <\/p>\n

The Russian star is currently 7-6 (7-2), 3-6, 7-6 (7-3), 2-1 down, and looking increasingly heat-ravaged. Even if he can wrestle back momentum, he’s going the long way round.<\/p>\n

At the moment, he’s looking very far from the Halle finalist bested only by former champion Alexander Bublik. <\/p>\n

\"epa12206065\"Russia'sFery is one set from the second round…<\/p>\n

The young Briton is roaring now, as he swipes the second set 6-1 from the number-20 seed Popyrin. <\/p>\n

The home talents are making hay on day one – as the temperature rises, what is it they say about mad dogs and Englishmen? <\/p>\n

Mail Sport’s James Sharpe is out on Court 15:<\/p>\n

Fery now a set away from a place in the second round. He\u2019s just dispatched Popyrin 6-1 in the second set in just half an hour with a blistering array of hitting. This is the same Popyrin that almost dumped Jack Draper out of Queen\u2019s. The Aussie is a serious player but currently being given the complete runaround by Fery on Court 15.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

\"ArthurNorrie’s knocked back, but Fery is flying<\/p>\n

The wildcard is two breaks up against Popyrin in the second set, leading his opponent 6-4, 4-1. <\/p>\n

Norrie, by contrast, has work to do after Bautista Agut levelled the playing field by clinching the second set 6-3. The veteran Spaniard has looked classy on grass this season, and Norrie will need to get back on the front foot fast. <\/p>\n

Wimbledon favourite Sir Cliff Richard returns to SW19<\/p>\n

With Wimbledon under way, Sir Cliff Richard was almost certain to make an appearance.<\/p>\n

The 84-year-old singer has been a regular fixture at SW19 through his membership at the All England Club to the point Cliff-spotting has become a yearly ritual.<\/p>\n

In 1996, he memorably led a crowd rendition of Summer Holiday during a lengthy rain delay on Centre Court in the men’s quarter-final between Pete Sampras and Richard Krajicek.<\/p>\n

He repeated the performance in 2022 during the Wimbledon centenary celebrations.<\/p>\n

But with temperatures tipped to pass 30C today we doubt Sir Cliff will grab the mic on Centre Court today.<\/p>\n

\"Picture\"MandatorySporting luminaries in the Royal Box<\/p>\n

… we’re minutes from action kicking off on Centre Court, but Alcaraz and Fognini will do so under the watchful eye of Sirs Gareth Southgate and David Beckham. <\/p>\n

Beckham, who has brought his mum Sandra, gives the crowd a wave with his cast – the England superstar underwent ultra-private surgery on a lingering injury last week. <\/p>\n

\"Sir\"LONDON,Sonay Kartal harnesses the support of the crowd – and makes history in the process<\/p>\n

That was by far one of the toughest matches I’ve played. I would say that I struggle against the big hitters, so getting that win today after her beating me last week was great. I appreciate all of you guys coming out. You guys were there when I needed you the most.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

I’ve made a conscious effort this year to play the bigger matches and put myself under the most pressure out on court. I knew that I wouldn’t get the results straightaway but that it would eventually pay off, and that’s what happened today.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

All eyes on Arthur Fery as he steals a march on the No20 seed, notes Mail Sport’s James Sharpe<\/p>\n

Just a little fist bump from Arthur Fery as he clinches a surprise opening set against Australian 20th seed Alexei Popyrin. The British world No 461 fought back from 0-30 down in his service game to take the opener 6-4 on Court 15. No huge show of emotion as he immediately sat down and wrapped a towel around his neck to guard against the heat. Fery not enjoying the whole support of the home crowd, though, with a bunch of vocal Aussies cheering on their man at every opportunity.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

\"ArthurOliver Tarvet on his statement win<\/p>\n

I\u2019m not here for the money, I’m here for the crowd, the experience and just to stamp my mark. <\/p><\/blockquote>\n

I think I\u2019ve done a good job so far.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

I’d say so. It’s not every day that the crowd can back a British winner who normally hangs out in the 700s of the world rankings. <\/p>\n

Although, that might not be the case for long…<\/p>\n

Britwatch: ANOTHER home favourite books his spot in the second round<\/p>\n

Oliver Tarvet has made it through qualifying, and now he’s potentially lined up a meeting with Alcaraz in the second round. <\/p>\n

Very little fuss from the Briton in the end, with Tarvet running out the winner 6-4, 6-4, 6-4. So that’s \u00a366,000 banked that he… cannot claim as a college athlete. Them’s the breaks! <\/p>\n

\"Oliver\"OliverPictures: Glamorous stars head to WimbledonNorrie takes the first set on Court 18<\/p>\n

The former British No1 is up against Roberto Bautista Agut, who cut a swathe through the draw at Queen’s before being beaten in the semi-finals by eventual winner Carlos Alcaraz. <\/p>\n

Few global sporting events have the pull of the Championships, with a number of famous faces featuring in both the Royal Box and the club’s hospitality seats on day one. <\/p>\n

<\/a>Kartal claims the first British win on day one! <\/p>\n

Ostapenko melted in the heat and although Kartal can’t claim it with a bagel, she does so with a third-set rout, winning 5-7, 6-2, 6-2. <\/p>\n

As per Mail Sport’s David Coverdale: <\/p>\n

Sonay Kartal is the first Brit through to the Wimbledon second round, much to the delight of the packed Court 3 crowd. A brilliant 7-5, 2-6, 6-2 win for the British No3 against 20th seed Jelena Ostapenko, Kartal had it all to do when she trailed 5-2 in the first set, but fought back valiantly to take the opener, then recovered well after losing the second set.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Two big beasts prepare to take to court<\/p>\n

Nothing but good vibes flowing between Carlos Alcaraz and Aryna Sabalenka, who both seem extremely high energy in the bright sunshine. <\/p>\n

Both of them will open their respective stadia: Sabalenka is set to play Carson Branstine on No1 Court, with Alcaraz playing the fiery – and controversial – Fabio Fognini. <\/p>\n

Ostapenko overheating against Kartal, says Mail Sport’s David Coverdale<\/p>\n

Jelena Ostapenko is getting increasingly tetchy on Court 3 against Britain\u2019s Sonay Kartal. On a few occasions she has given the crowd daggers for chatting. The umpire has told spectators to keep quiet but it is more a sign of Ostapenko\u2019s struggles on court. She trails the Brit 3-0 in the third set. <\/p><\/blockquote>\n

\"Jelena<\/p>\n

French Open wildcard Lois Boisson might have been looking for a victory lap in SW19 after her home Grand Slam semi-final appearance, but Branstine soon put a stop to that. <\/p>\n

After a victorious qualifying run, she takes on the world No1 Aryna Sabalenka today.<\/p>\n

<\/a>Disappointing scenes from Court 14<\/p>\n

After her medical timeout, Jabeur has now retired, with Tomova progressing to the second round. <\/p>\n

Desperately sad news for the former finalist who, regardless of appearing muted on media day and having the lowest of expectations, doesn’t deserve this. <\/p>\n

\"Tunisia'sMail Sport’s Matthew Lambwell is keeping a close eye on Tarvet<\/p>\n

Brit Oliver Tarvet and his extended grunt are going very well over on Court 4, up a set and a break on fellow qualifier Leandro Riedi. The Swiss is not happy with the time Tarvet is taking to rise from his chair at the end of changeovers. <\/p><\/blockquote>\n

‘That’s the fifth time, he’s too slow,’ Riedi complained to the umpire. This is a huge match for both men – with the prize being a likely matchup with defending champion Carlos Alcaraz.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

\"TennisElina Svitolina wins the first match of Wimbledon 2025<\/p>\n

The former two-time semi-finalist wasted no time in her despatch Anna Bondar 6-3, 6-1. <\/p>\n

Onwards for the Ukrainian, and Britain’s Cameron Norrie plays next on Court 18<\/p>\n

Meanwhile on Court 4, Briton Oliver Tarvet has taken the first set 6-4 and leads 3-2 in the second, while Ostapenko has made another fast start in the second, and leads Kartal 3-1. <\/p>\n

Succession-planning for Wimbledon’s most feathery legacy <\/p>\n

Wimbledon bosses are grooming a successor for SW19 favourite Rufus the hawk to protect Centre Court from meddlesome pigeons.<\/p>\n

For 17 years the revered bird of prey has watched the skies at the Championships and there were fears he could go the way of line judges and be replaced by AI.<\/p>\n

But chief executive Sally Bolton this morning put paid to the rumours and confirmed that Rufus’ own fledgling will take up the mantle at the world’s most historic tennis tournament.<\/p>\n

Asked if Rufus would be replaced by digital anti-pigeon tech, Ms Bolton said: ‘I don’t know that this is correct, but I think we are now already working with the son or daughter of Rufus.<\/p>\n

‘It\u2019s a family business.I think we have a succession plan for Rufus.’<\/p>\n

An insider confirmed that Rufus’ own eyas was already in training ‘alongside’ him in preparation.<\/p>\n

But the father, dubbed ‘The Real Hawk-Eye’, is still running the skies as his 18th tournament kicks off today.<\/p>\n

Rufus was famously stolen from his owner’s car in 2012 prompting a hunt across South West London before being found safe and well four days later.<\/p>\n

Born in captivity in Northamptonshire, he starts every day at 6am to prepare to protect Centre Court and Court Number One.<\/p>\n

A picture of Rufus’ instagram showed him sat on the umpire’s chair on Centre Court this morning with the caption: ‘Hawk Eye, reporting for duty.’<\/p>\n

\"RufusMail Sport speaks to the anti-AI protestors<\/p>\n

We shared pictures of the demonstration earlier, and now Mail Sport’s David Coverdale caught up with the men dressed as line judges – relics of a bygone era, unbelievably. <\/p>\n

Two London students \u2013 Harry Robson, 27, and Gabriel Paul, 26 – are dressed as now defunct line judges outside Wimbledon, protesting about AI stealing jobs.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Robson told me: \u2018We are creative students – I am a writer, Gabriel is an art director. We graduate in three weeks and we are worried ourselves about the whole encroachment of AI.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

\u2018The whole idea that these things can be replaced by machines is worrying. It is a wider problem.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

\u2018We have had some former line judges come up to us and say they totally agree and they are pleased we are making a statement. To an extent, Wimbledon has to move with the times, but it is a shame.\u2019<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

\"WimbledonBritwatch: The Sonay is coming out (groan)<\/p>\n

Rain or shine, there’s puns to be had with Kartal, who took this blog’s advice in a major way and has since romped to the verge of set point against Ostapenko. <\/p>\n

With a final ace, Kartal takes her final game to love. 7-5, the Briton’s ahead. <\/p>\n

\"LONDON,Britwatch: Andy Murray taking in a different type of grass with Carlos Alcaraz<\/p>\n

Perhaps not a true Britwatch here, but Murray and Alcaraz headed out to the green for the second time over the weekend, with Murray claiming victory in the first outing… and not so in the second. <\/p>\n

But while Alcaraz was quick to mock Murray’s showing on Sunday, the two-time Wimbledon champion noted that the young Spaniard’s efforts had been boosted considerably by his coach – and former Murray sparring partner – Juan Carlos Ferrero. <\/p>\n

No dimming of Murray’s competitive edge, then. <\/p>\n

Things aren’t looking good for Ons Jabeur<\/p>\n

The former finalist has been candid about the fact that she’s still healing from losing to Marketa Vondrousova in the 2023 final, and has battled through injury and a dip in form ever since her Centre Court appearance. <\/p>\n

But things are looking really uncomfortable now, with Jabeur having taken a medical timeout in her match against Viktoriya Tomova, at 3-2 down.<\/p>\n

Among today’s Royal Box invitees…<\/p>\n

A suitably regal contingent of Princess Beatrice and her husband Edouardo Mapelli Mozzi, and her mother Sarah Ferguson welcome sporting luminaries including newly minted Sir Gareth Southgate, Sir-to-be David Beckham, and Stuart Broad. <\/p>\n

The arts are well represented too, by Eddie Redmayne, Jason Isaacs, Richard Osman, and historian Niall Ferguson all also in attendance. <\/p>\n

Dan Evans, unplugged<\/p>\n

While not in action today, wildcard veteran Dan Evans will be tomorrow and is on course for a collision with no lesser opponent than Novak Djokovic if he makes it to round two. <\/p>\n

But before doing so, he bared his soul to the Wimbledon press pack over the weekend, speakingly movingly about the very real conflicts he has ever continuing his career. <\/p>\n

Britwatch: Not so Sonay on No3 Court<\/p>\n

The British No3 has been rising through the rankings and could yet be challenging Katie Boulter for her spot in the British standings, but Sonay Kartal will have to think fast against a charging Jelena Ostapenko. <\/p>\n

The WTA trickster is off to the races on No3 Court, having claimed the first three games. Kartal is looking to hold serve for the first time, but at 40-love is thwarted by a flashing return winner off her second attempt. <\/p>\n

Kartal would love to get her revenge, having been bested by the former French Open winner just last week at Eastbourne in straight sets.<\/p>\n

No time like the present, Sonay. <\/p>\n

\"SonayPlayers being stalked is ‘a sad reality’, says All England Club chief<\/p>\n

Sally Bolton sat down with the media this morning, and after the tournament announced they would increase security at this year’s Championships, shed some light on plans: <\/p>\n

Whether it’s player security or security of all the people that are here on the grounds, it’s something that is always top of our priority list.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

And every year, we are reviewing the security we put in place, both for the athletes and for everybody that’s here, based on the threat and risk profile.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

So in any given year, that will change a little bit from the previous years, depending on what we think we are trying to address.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Obviously, what we saw with the incidents with Emma Raducanu, I think brings it front of mind for people, perhaps outside the tennis community,<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Sadly, the reality for particularly female athletes in sport is it’s not particularly unusual (to deal with stalkers).<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

And so those are the sorts of issues that we are fairly well versed in dealing with. I would say that we are always reviewing security.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Tennis fans joined the famous Queue in sweltering heat this morning in SW19 in what is expected to be the warmest ever start to the Grand Slam.<\/p>\n

Many who had camped out overnight were seen with umbrellas to protect them from the sun as forecasters predict today could be one of the hottest June days in UK history.<\/p>\n

An update from Wimbledon’s official website on Monday read: ‘Please note there is hot weather forecast for Monday and Tuesday. In both The Queue and the Grounds there may be periods where shade is not available.<\/p>\n

‘Please plan appropriately, including bringing water, suncream and a hat. Water refill points are available in the Queue and around the Grounds.’<\/p>\n
