{"id":226957,"date":"2025-06-30T15:40:11","date_gmt":"2025-06-30T15:40:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/226957\/"},"modified":"2025-06-30T15:40:11","modified_gmt":"2025-06-30T15:40:11","slug":"eu-ukraine-strike-long-term-food-trade-deal-with-strings-attached","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/226957\/","title":{"rendered":"EU, Ukraine strike long-term food trade deal with strings attached"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n<strong>The EU has clinched a long-term trade deal with Ukraine, formally closing the chapter on wartime trade liberalisation \u2013 but crucial details remain unknown.<\/strong>\n<\/p>\n<p>\nEU Trade Commissioner Maro\u0161 \u0160ef\u010dovi\u010d and his agriculture counterpart Christophe Hansen announced the agreement on Monday, hailing it as a \u201cpredictable\u201d and \u201creciprocal\u201d pact, without disclosing the agreed quotas or volumes.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nThe fine print, he added, will be finalised \u201cin the coming days.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p>\nThe new arrangement replaces the so-called autonomous trade measures (ATMs), which have allowed tariff-free agri-food imports from Ukraine since 2022. Those expired on 5 June, reviving pre-war trade rules \u2013 albeit temporarily.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nThe revamped framework, structured in three tiers, offers modest openings for Ukraine on products considered as \u201csensitive\u201d by EU countries like eggs, poultry, sugar, wheat, maize or honey \u2013 all capped with slight quota increases.\n<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/12640412-800x600.jpg\" class=\"attachment-4x3 size-4x3 wp-post-image ea-media-unrolled ea-media-formatted img-responsive\" alt=\"\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\nA second tier of goods \u2013 including butter, skimmed milk powder, malt, gluten, oats and barley \u2013 will see their quotas increase to match the highest levels reached since the war began.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nA third group will be fully liberalised, including whole milk powder, fermented milk, mushrooms and grape juice.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nTalks wrapped up over the weekend, \u0160ef\u010dovi\u010d said \u2013 less than a month after negotiations formally kicked off.
